Iran is preparing legislation that would impose tolls on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian state-aligned media.

Traffic in the waterway, a critical shipping route, has effectively come to a standstill since the U.S. and Israel’s war with Iran began almost four weeks ago. Subsequent supply constraints, along with attacks on energy facilities and regional production shutdowns, have pushed oil prices into triple digits.

Revolutionary Guard-aligned news agency Fars said overnight that a lawmaker had told its reporter the plans to impose tolls were also a bid to officialize Iranian supervision over the Strait of Hormuz.

I got that reference. 👆

[–] crystalmerchant@lemmy.world 22 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Wait were they not already doing this before the "war"? Exposes my ignorance of maritime shipping lol

[–] Corporal_Punishment@feddit.uk 19 points 5 days ago

The strait is "owned" by other countries as well.

Iran can only technically charge ships sailing in its half....

Although its probably going to say that ships sailing in the other half will be attacked

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 6 points 5 days ago

There weren't mines (or the possibility of mines) before the war

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

There was reporting that they were going to charge in yuan exclusively.

No more dollar as the world reserve currency. Death of the petrodollar.

Glorious.

[–] Mister_Hangman@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Omg I can only get so erect.

[–] droopy4096@lemmy.ca 9 points 6 days ago

So THAT is the glorious big present POTUS47 was yapping about earlier? Nice present in a shape of extortion...

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 days ago

It's cheaper than western insurance. Will remain so, until peace.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 1 points 6 days ago

If other Middle Eastern countries are pissed off, it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

The U.S. is in the wrong for starting the war, but Iran placing a toll on 30 percent of the world's oil will only further convince other countries to side against it.

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 45 points 6 days ago (1 children)

OK but maybe this will push to more green energy since solar is already so much cheaper than oil.

[–] innermachine@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Too bad storing the energy isn't. Hopefully this leads to some leaps in better tech!

[–] grue@lemmy.world 38 points 6 days ago (2 children)

So what? With the US already attacking them anyway, they have nothing to lose.

[–] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

They have everything to lose if other countries provide support to the U.S. Iran is already infringing upon Oman's sovereignty by stopping ships from transiting the straight through its territorial waters. Not allowing neutral third parties to use the straight bribe-free incentives otherwise neutral countries to side against it.

That's like being in a bar fight with an MMA fighter and being worried that their 90 lb weakling friend might join in.

Edit: to be clear, though, the main intent of my previous comment wasn't about the US' military might. I was really just trying to allude to why, from a realpolitik perspective, it was fucking stupid of the US to attack in the first place.

[–] MrMakabar@slrpnk.net -3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The US is "just" bombing Iran right now. Take for example Pakistan. They launched missiles against each other two years ago. It would be relatively easy for Pakistan to invade Iran and get support from the US and the Gulf states for that. Iran controls some islands in the Strait of Hormuz, which the UAE claims to be theirs. The Azerbijan and Iran also are not exactly friends.

A ground invasion could seriously dethrone the Islamic leadership.

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 13 points 6 days ago (1 children)

How do think a ground invasion of Iran, the famously impossible to invade area for literally thousands of years, would go? Do you think that it would be like Iraq where the USA blitzkrieged with tanks through to the capital? Not likely. The entire region is mountains. Rock slides would be a disaster in waiting (and able to be triggered via artillery or drones) at every turn.

[–] MrMakabar@slrpnk.net -5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

How do think a ground invasion of Iran, the famously impossible to invade area for literally thousands of years, would go?

There were a couple of mongol and Turkish invasion, as well as the Islamic Conquest. Last century the Soviets and British invaded Iran rather easily during WW2 as well.

Do you think that it would be like Iraq where the USA blitzkrieged with tanks through to the capital?

You use helicopters and paratroopers to take an airport close to Theran and then land troops with planes. That is how the US would invade. Iran has lost its air defense, so that is possible.

I honestly have very little doubt, that the US can take Iran, if they wanted too. The issue is leaving it is a decent state after the war. However Israel does not care about that.

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

Oops I mined the runway. Oops a drone hit the runway. Oops the air defense isn't actually all out and now 300 American paratroopers are dead.

If we bent our entire economy around it, yeah maybe. We're not doing that and that wouldn't be a "success." It would be a phyrric victory AT BEST.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 15 points 6 days ago

And do... what, exactly? Europeans don't want to touch this mess with a 10ft pole (they might, but it won't be because of this), the Gulf is already on America's side, Russia only stands to gain from this, China is already getting free passage and neutral countries for the most part have no way of pressuring Iran here. That's the thing about being a pariah state: They already have nothing to lose.

[–] modernangel@sh.itjust.works 9 points 6 days ago

oil is a shit commodity. fossil fuel oligarchs have stifled alternatives to keep reaping subsidies, and this global fuel panic is just the shit pigeon come home to roost and shitting on billions of innocent bystanders the whole way.

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I'm one of the rest of the world and I say, fuck that opinion. Iran, please make it 50% just because.

[–] OccamsRazer@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Yes, please screw the entire world economy and use it to fund global jihad. As long as it embarrasses Donald Trump then it's worth it.
