Anyone who refers to their possessions by the corporate trademark and coddles it like a newborn really will believe they've ruined it. It's not a PC, it's a Mac. It's not a car, it's an Alfa. It's not a vacuum, it's a Dyson. It's not a smoker, it's a Traeger. And so on. Talking to these people is like talking to someone with a mental illness.
My biggest pet peeve is doctors referring to medication by brand name instead of active ingredient.
Should be illegal, in my view.
I'm a little shit and whenever "most dominant brand name for paracetamol"* and "most dominant brand name for Ibuprofen"* are mentioned by a doctor, I play dumb and ask if that's paracetamol/Ibuprofen.
They're literally advertising for companies who's product is 5x more expensive for absolutely no reason whatsoever.
*I refuse to give them free advertising
Granted, often the non-generic name is just way easier to remember and say. Take acetylsalicylic acid vs aspirin lol.
It's not a tissue, it's a Kleenex.
Tbf some of these brands get so tied to the product that people forget that that's just the brand and their not the only ones who make that product. I've been bothered before by people calling any suv a Jeep whether it was a Jeep or not, but on the other hand I didn't know that Dremel was a company until embarrassingly recently.

alternatively, i say mac because its quicker than laptop/computer/pc and macbook because it provides more context with the same amount of effort… without that context, people will assume windows, which is fine - it’s not a status thing (for me) - but when discussing how to get things done, it avoids the minor annoyance of mismatched expectations for no extra effort

I like it when people show pictures of their computer and it’s just a pile of parts with no case sitting on a table with cables going into it. It is one of the most punk rock things I’ve seen.

Hmmmm.... Needs an SSD, otherwise a very solid daily driver.
I'd also suggest adding a few stickers to the case. That's how software determines compatibility.
CPU and ram might help performance a little. But Linux can run in anything.

I get out there, unstrapped the lid (they had a belt around it instead of screws, give where it was, i was thankful.
lifted the lid and cardboard dust just billowed out. It was a 386 or maybe a 486sx no cpu fan, but it was full up to the PS with box dust, i took it down to the floor and blew it out, put it right back in service, lasted longer than the plant.
This is the difference between the guy driving the old rusted out Camaro with a V8 vs the guy with the brand new Honda civic with a bumper scratch.
Civic? Maybe they got more expensive while I wasn't looking, but the Civic is supposed to be entry isn't it?
The point is that one has been turned into a work horse with age while the other is brand new. It's basically why it's funny seeing brand new sports cars being overtaken by a 2001 Toyota Tacoma going 85 in the fast lane with a maxed out rpm.
I dropped an 05 Macbook on the steps, had a mark about like that. Figured it was fine, I could barely open it, racked the whole case in some way i never expected.
Bottom pic was my experience when I brought an old family laptop back from the dead. It had a broken hinge that made the built in keyboard and main body peel apart. It would take forever to do anything, especially after it "upgraded" to Windows 11.
Wiped the os to put Linux Mint on it, plugged in a usb keyboard and it's been doing great since!
One of my old roommates was a heavy smoker and dear God the inside of his computer was a nightmare.
idk i was pretty upset when i accidentally threw my $6000 macbook at the very corner of a concrete surface and it got scuffed up but id have been far more worried about a non-macbook… the gash in the aluminium would have been completely fucked plastic and internals
Wouldn't plastic handle the shock better?
when i say threw it i mean probably equivalent to dropping it from at least 1, maybe 2 storeys up so it had some momentum to it (it was an accident … a stupid, stupid accident)
plastic would have cracked for sure and exposed the internals directly to the concrete before taking away much force, or would have bent and not really protected much
the deceleration was probably higher, but that force was spread evenly rather than on a point, and the components in a macbook are very solidly attached to the frame, which again would have helped spread the deceleration force over more area - imo
Yup.
And they probably did ruin their Macbook, since Macs are designed to be irreparable on purpose and a ding like that may have affected screen functionality significantly.
