The mastodon and lemmy content I’m seeing feels like 90% of it comes from people who are:

  • ~30 years old or older

  • tech enthusiasts/workers

  • linux users

There’s nothing wrong with that particular demographic or anything, but it doesn’t feel like a win to me if the entire fediverse is just one big monoculture.

I wonder what it is that is keeping more diverse users away? Is picking a server/federation too complicated? Or is it that they don’t see any content that they like?

Thoughts?

Hey! I use Windows. And because I choose to. And I really dislike any unix-like systems to put it mildly.

The rest fits.

Well it's new open source tech that can be self hosted by the 30+ tech nerds that have the money and interest in it.

as a young IT with friends who dont know much about IT i have to say that most around 20 use reddit, instagram, ... cause its the only thing they know. everyone they know uses them and many of them want likes, ...

if they would join the fediverse:

  1. they wouldnt understand how it works. what is a server? why choose an instance? its just too complicated
  2. all their friends dont use the fediverse. they would be alone and have nobody who they can share things to
  3. they would mostly see tech stuff and less in categories they are interested in
  4. none of the people they follow on instagram are here. the cant follow their celebrities, ... and see their content
  5. the fediverse still has to less users to be successful worldwide. its growing. and just like facebook in its first years, its growing slow.

=> give it a few more years and get your friends, family & collegues on here and see the fediverse grow

Funny observation, but admittedly I fit 100%

I've seen people post about "understanding" Lemmy and the fediverse, and "figurring out" how it works, although it seems pretty straightforward. If this is a barrier for some people, preventing them from joining, I think that might be a benefit.

I've seen statistics saying the dominant age group on reddit is around 13 years. I don't mind teenagers participating, that's good. But they shouldn't dominate, if they do it becomes to much like a "follow me, I'm blind too." community.

It seems to me the debates here are better than on reddit. I hope we don't lose that.

Man since when was early to mid 20's considered old 😔

As far as what others have commented, I prefer to never touch Linux with a 10 ft limbo pole if I absolutely don't have to (school, work, etc). Obviously this has exceptions such as Android and other Unix offshoots. Maybe some common groundwork other users have is that we all like tech and are willing to try new experiments even if it doesn't work out right away.

hey! i'll have you know i'm only 26. calling me out...

i also haven't used linux for a while but i'm currently procrastinating on setting it up on my laptop because windows modern standby hella sucks

I'm neither cis male nor that old but I fit the other two demographics lmao

Might be that tech inrerested ppl are more inclined to switch to less used alternatives when they allow for a more free and open platform. Also the barrier of entry for those might be quite a bit lower than the average Redditor

Who else would know about a new type of social media tech that hasn't existed before?

I resemble that remark! Dang, you might be right. If so, well ... that's good and bad as others have said. Can we do surveys on Lemmy?

[–] kplaceholder@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

FWIW, someone on my Mastodon TL suspected the same thing and made a poll regarding the users age. About 850 people voted and 63% turned out to be 30-50 years old.

Here's the toot in question. In Spanish tho https://mastodon.social/@batmanyyo/110668830560740847

I just joined lemmy and I am 20 and I am liking it here

[–] MrPeach4tlanta@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I don't fit that demographic whatsoever, but I am a tech nerd and a Linux user.

Check. Check. And check.

The fediverse is mostly full of FOSS enthusiasts, which happens to heavily include linux users.

That's what attracted me to the fediverse in the first place, all the linux people.

The old people are people who grew up before Facebook and corporate social media, as such have no loyalty to said platforms.

Quite fine by me, to be honest. I was tired of all the pokemon memes and references, as well as gamespeak everywhere (like "10+ XP, hurr hurr!")
