Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Even though most fans would love the game to receive some love after so many years, be it through a remaster or just a patch here and there, it's still arguably one of the best soulslikes there is. The impact it had on the genre is nothing to sneeze at, and so many games have drawn inspiration from it.

What's your most cherished moment or memory you had with the game? Got lost in the lore? Fell in love with the world building? Honed your combat skills against a certain boss? Let me know!

It's hard for me to pick a single one, but I'd probably have to give it to the audiobook The Paleblood Hunt. Back when I really got into the game, around 2021/22 it must have been, I sorta knew what the game was about but not enough to know the entirety of the game. So in parallel to my first playthrough, I started listening to the audiobook. In a way, it did kinda spoil some parts of the story, either by explaining plot lines or name-dropping certain characters, but since I couldn't map them to something I've seen, I didn't remember anyways in the end. Made it all the cooler when I did get to meet the character or boss in the game after hearing about them in the audiobook and let to a kind of aha moment.

Going back through the game on my all bosses run and finding Ebriatas and Maria for the first time. Ebriatas isn't the most fun fight, but her design is just so perfect. And learning the Maria fight is just so rewarding, like fighting Gehrman again but even tighter.

I love Ebrietas from a design perspective as well as lore perspective, but the fight is sooo difficult on BL4 that I started disliking the fight overall D: Good thing it's optional

I just want to add to the conversation that as a (former) xboxer who has never owned a PS, whose favorite genre is SoulsBorne, this one is my Holy Grail. I've been wanting to play since it came out. I also hope this game gets shown some love soon.

Have you gotten around to getting a PlayStation to play the game? There's also emulation if you haven't - runs surprisingly well on PC depending on your rig

I picked a wrong time to give up consoles. I want to build a PC, but all this RAM news has me a little anxious

Dude, you tell me. I built my PC last year around July/August right before all this RAM insanity started, so I got my 16GB DDR4 for 30€ used. Had I waited just a few months longer, I would have had to pay 2-3x as much. All these AI speculators ruining the PC market for hallucinated earnings gained by hallucinating AI is so stupid

I hear ya. Hey man, I appreciate the conversation. We need more of this on Lemmy if it's to become viable. Have a fantastic day, where ever you are.

For sure - glad to be here and glad you feel this way about Lemmy :) we've got our little niche here and it's been really cozy here for the past three years

It was never about the game, it was about the memes we collected along the way.

Mostly this one:

This is going to sound peculiar but despite the game's setting, early on I realized I found certain elements of it comforting.

That engaged me in a lot of self reflection, trying to figure out why. Some realizations came quick, others took some years to fully form, but I honestly think this game helped me understand parts of myself a little better.

So, probably that. It's a bit abstract without going into particulars, but a big reason why it has such a strong hold on me. <3

I think I know what you're hinting at, and I'm glad the game had such an effect on you and helped you in that way :)

I have many fantastic memories of playing this game. The gameplay, the atmosphere. the lore. Beating the Clearic beast for the first time, ascending to the top of the nightmare, visiting the Orphanage, or even more gripping the Research Hall, getting beat up by Orphan.

But you know what? The best thing about this game is that it helped me at a point in my live when I needed it. I was not in a great place and I thought 'Why not play that game you bought for 20€ years ago?'. It gave a piece of media to really immerse myself in for a bit.

There was this mother #$$%$ by @#$@% and forced to $$%^@^ ##%^^ to the spon of $@^@&&&@ while being ##%%^^@^ by a group of $#%#&$^@ who consume her $#%#&* with $#^^&&#.

... that was quite funny.

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

Not sure I'd classify it as funny but yea, that's definitely a plot point
