I would love to see what a shit-show that would be here in the US. Those super-ginormous SUVs that are all the rage with soccer moms might as well have their fuel consumption measured in gallons-per-mile

You're young, huh. The 70s were a shitshow because of fuel rationing, among other things. There would be mile long lines to the gas station and, I'm told, since I only existed as other entities' atoms, you could only get maybe 2 or 3 gallons

Wtf you're right; this isn't the YMCA.

Imagine a world where ppl in USA have to walk (on the streets) to get places while the rich still take private jets everywhere.

If you can't imagine just wait a bit maybe.

I live closer to the Czech border, where Austrian customs is actively policing - on the basis that driving there just to fill up on fuel is tax evasion.

Lol, they should start doing that here in the Netherlands, just for fun. There are SO many people that go fuel in Belgium or Germany. People would lose their minds.

They always act like we have it so tough here but then I read something like this and it really puts things into perspective.

Would suck to have an ICE car right now

[–] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago

It really does suck. I'm lucky that I live in a place where we have a excellent public transportation. For the first time in ages I'm happy that the engine in my shitty Peugeot is broken.

But.. I have a friend who bought herself a nice little house 40min's away from civilization. She was managing quite well, she has a old Toyota Corolla which is cheap to run and upkeep. She's been saving up for a EV but she works in a shop, her salary isn't amazing. And her house has a lot of stuff to fix and all that. It does suck for her. Luckily she has a friend who lives near where she works, she says she can stay there a few nights a week to save on fuel.
