There are over 700 GPL titles that slap available on Linux. So go Linux and get gaming

[–] emeralddawn45@lemmy.dbzer0.com 47 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Oh yeah, Deluge, Transmission, qBittorrent, those are just a few of my favourites. Oh and TuxRacer of course.

[–] TheEntity@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

Battle for Wesnoth can definitely compete with most commercial titles.

[–] EarlOfSam@quokk.au 7 points 1 week ago

Love me Luanti. Love me voxel games. Simple as.

My husband swears by Warzone 2100

Beyond All Reason (Total Annihilation community clone) is excellent and FOSS

Dwarf Fortress is free also (the Steam version is just a tile pack and some UI changes, Dwarf Fortress tile packs are legion)

[–] night_petal@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago

I highly recommend Mindustry, and HedgeWars (Worms clone but with hedgehogs). And honestly Super Tux cart is pretty solid, even if bits of it feel dated.

[–] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 41 points 1 week ago (2 children)

You can pirate games, you can't pirate RAM. If you have a PC, you're good.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 27 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You don't need to pirate ram. www.downloadmoreram.com has it legit for free.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Swap Google drive is the better joke.

Connectix wasn’t the scam, theirs actually was a novel utility.

Well, I've never been [to] Greenland

And I've never been to Denver

And I've never buried treasure in St. Louis or St. Paul

And I've never been to Moscow

And I've never been to Tampa

And I've never been to Boston in the fall

'Cause we're the Pirates

Who don't do anything

We just stay home and lie around

And if you ask us to do anything

We'll just tell you:

...

We don't do anything.

EDIT:

Viking Hippie found a typo!

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Veggie tales, on lemmy? Alright.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I feel like the "raised fairly extreme Christian -> fuck basically all that noise" demographic is uh, kinda either underrepresented or unacknowledged on lemmy.

I may no longer be religious, but, goddamnit, that song is a banger.

I've previously ... apparently just completely introduced a fair amount of people to the NRA's uh Eddie Eagle, the gun safety mascot.

I'm guessing there is actually a fairly large amount of nerds who were raised American Christian in the 90s, who also basically had dysfunctional families, and thus spent a lot of time on their computers and the internet, trying to escape that.

[–] Luminous5481@anarchist.nexus 5 points 1 week ago

It's been a long time since I heard Veggie Tales.

[–] meow@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 week ago

I love it!!!

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Well, I've never been Greenland

Me neither, but I HAVE been there.

It's quite lovely in the summer and nowhere near as cold as you'd expect.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Ah! The lyrics page I copied from must have messed that up, hah!

... the verses get increasingly ridiculous.

By the end, you have:

And I've never licked a spark plug

And I've never sniffed a stink bug

And I've never painted daisies on a big red rubber ball

And I've never bathed in yogurt

And I don't look good in leggings

...

And we've never been to Boston in the fall!

... this is all being sung by a 90s CGI/cartoon cucumber with a face, amongst a bunch of other CGI fruits and vegetables, dressed as pirates, basically on beach lounge chairs, on a moored like, galleass or something.

I think ostensibly the joke for the adults is supposed to be like, a guy or some guys who just own a boat, but never actually take it out, just use it as an excuse to get away from the house.

[–] s@piefed.world 27 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Obviously somebody’s never heard of the fun free PC games of Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Calculator

[–] username_1@programming.dev 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

GCC is the best game ever. I play it for 30 years, community is very active, new versions are released regularly!

But I do :)

Over the past like 5 years I have ever only used Epic for one rhing, collecting the free 1 to 2 games they offer every Thursday. I have like 200+ games from that alone. Just don't buy anything from them and your good, people do not like Epic at all so this may get some downvotes but free is free to me.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Too bad epic is just trash and lacks basic functions that should be standard for any competent storefront. I used it for a free game once a few years ago and I couldn't even play the game when my Internet died after I'd already played it.

Nothing like being so mad a shit service giving you a free product that you go and purchase the same product later from a real games store that had basic functionality.

To be honest I just don't bother with the service at all, even if it were for the free games. Last time I tried to use it every time I'd attempt to log in, the application would only show a black window and nothing else. I contacted their support and they informed me that it was because I was trying to run the service at an unsupported resolution. I needed to lower the resolution of my desktop from 1440p to 1080p in order to view the login window. I asked them if I'd need to do this every single time I wanted to use the application and they said yes.

For shits and giggles, I tried it out and they were right. When I was at 1080p, I could actually see the login window. I finished logging in, saw the store front, increased my resolution back up to 1440p, and could no longer see the store front. I immediately uninstalled the application and haven't touched their service since then.

It's been quite a few years since this happened, so I assume they've probably fixed this particular issue but I specifically remember being completely baffled at how quickly they accurately determined that that was the issue (demonstrating it was a known issue), how odd it was that a windowed application would care so much about the resolution of my machine that it would just stop rendering entirely, and the audacity of the service as a whole to just accept that lowering your resolution was the only viable solution without even mentioning anything to the effect of it being an issue they're actively working on fixing.

Basically the only part of that entire situation that reflected well on them was their support service I spoke with. Everything else (including their exclusivity contracts for games in the years following) has painted them in such a negative light in my eyes that I've never considered using service ever since, even knowing that the specific issue I had with their software was probably fixed a long time ago. Well, at least I assume it was.

[–] dubyakay@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Luckily these storefront issues don't exist with Heroic Launcher.

I have a lot of free games.

[–] UxyIVrljPeRl@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

Install OpenTTD.

[–] ekZepp@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Mmm. Do you know that there are games given for free on different platforms. Even if your pc can't run an high spec recent 3A, you can find plenty of low graphic entertaining games.

Super Tux Kart is right there!!!

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Games in GOG for 2€ or less right now. Quite a number of them still look great and others have fun gameplay which transcends time.

Then there are quite a lot of free games like OpenTTD or Luanti.

Last but not least, for PC games piracy has a pretty low technical barrier to entry.

[–] JelleWho@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Put in your hat, we are sailing off

Beyond All Reason is free, open source, and a good strategy game. They are still rebuilding the campaign though.

[–] BackgrndNoize@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Most older games on steam are $5 or less, and many of them are still very fun to play, also more recent games go on sale on steam all the time

[–] Skv@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Many older games are on GoG too, but as a whole, greed and all these damn launchers are the problem. Dev stops shipping or distributing copies - off to myabandonware as all software should instead of re-re-re-re-milking people and stuffing them into some ecosystem.

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I've had my PC for like 2 console generations, it still runs new games 60fps 4k, and if I really wanted to I could pirate basically any game.

[–] Willy@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

maybe that's the point of the handcuffs being so loose

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 4 points 1 week ago

Ah, my interpretation was that the shackles represented a self imposed financial situation from buying a PC, but I like yours better.

Get jackett and the world opens for you

Also games should be aquire carefully from trusted sources like the official fitgirl repacks site

[–] Postmortal_Pop@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Asking for a friend I just heard of jacket this weekend, what's that about?

Also, you wouldn't happen to know how to get fitgirl stuff to run on Linux would you?

[–] pewpew@feddit.it 2 points 1 week ago

RIP myrient.erista.me, you will be missed

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yeah but, if you want legit free game you can just rob Epic.

Also there's tons of f2p on steam, just brace yourself for the monetization.

[–] FoxFairline@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Try Guild Wars 2 if MMOs are your thing. You can play a long time before ever needing any money to buy expansions.

[–] Skv@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

100%. Combat is fun, random overworld events are better than static spawn points, and the map is enormous.

SWToR being f2p is another good, second-to-none story driver MMO you can sink plethora of hours before needing to sub for 1 month for latest "expanslop".
