Ah I see the problem, the front fell off.

[–] caurvo@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago

Is that typical?

[–] albbi@piefed.ca 6 points 1 week ago

Oh, that's a heck of a hit.

~~I thought this was gonna be some classic NYC crud after a wing struck like maybe the radio antenna but nah it's actually a hard collision lol.~~

Pilots did not survive :/

The news channel said that the fire truck was manned by police officers, citing sources. It had earlier said a sergeant and an officer had broken limbs and were in stable condition at a hospital.

Typical, idiot pigs driving on an active runway

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Why is police driving a fire truck anyway? (And that's without even asking what the fuck they were doing on a runway)

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They were responding to a call.

[–] whats_a_lemmy@midwest.social 1 points 1 week ago

Don't they have police cars for that sort of thing?

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

Read the articles, air traffic controller fucked up and told them the runway was clear, they were responding to report of fire on another plane.

Based pilot, making the world a better place.

Three cheers for this hero!

[–] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The pilot and co pilot died though

[–] youcantreadthis@quokk.au 1 points 1 week ago

Oh. Well thats not ideal. Still; they did a good thing while they died.

How do I @everyone subbed to fuckCars?

[–] renzhexiangjiao@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

simply crosspost it there, but why c/fuckcars?

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Because a car hit a plane.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Fire truck. This would not happen if airport firefighters used bicycles.

[–] youcantreadthis@quokk.au 1 points 1 week ago

But a bunch of cops got injured so this was a rare case of both planes and cars being good.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not looking to assign blame, just trying to understand what happened...

I get how a pilot in a plane has little visibility and even less maneuverability on the ground, but how does the driver in the firetruck not see or avoid a jet?

Trust in the person who has eyes on everything. It's unfortunate they were the only atc working.

More nuanced answer is probably something along the lines of compliance and blind trust in what the atc says but no validation on their part. Focus on getting to their call instead of looking both ways. Also I have no idea what an airplane looks like coming down the runway at night with all the other lights. Also also poor estimation of speed of an object coming right at you. That last ones the same issue people have with trains when they try to beat the train over the tracks.

I can only make an educated guess why there was only one atc at that time but I'm sure it'll turn political soon if it hasn't already.
