Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

There are much more admirable paisans out there. Guglielmo Marconi. Galileo Galilei. Luigi Mangione. Luciano Pavarotti. Leonardo da Vinci.

C'mon man.

Of course, but Columbus was pivotal in the massacre of millions of native people. Of course the Trump team wants a statue of him.

They got upset because Columbus has been "Cancelled" due to all the awful shit he did. So this is their way to "stick" it to the libs.

All they do it performative theater. They don't actually know or care about Columbus, only that by praising him it upsets people with a conscience, so they keep doing it.

It really is just that.

This is what happens when the elementary school bully grows up without getting a good punch in the face along the way.

Awful shit aside, and it was awful shit, Columbus has nothing to do with north america. He never set foot on what we now call the USA.

[–] sik0fewl@piefed.ca 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They didn’t think they could get away with a slaver confederate general.

[–] SayJess@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 1 week ago

Oh they’ll get there.

Amerigo Vespucci would make more sense than Columbus if we're looking for explorers.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 week ago

They would short-circuit if they realized america was named after an italian guy...

[–] tomi000@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

You mean Leonardo di Caprio

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago

It's so funny how they sleep on Amerigo Vespucci.

It's like they can't cope with knowing that their prescious america was named after an Italian guy. It conflicts with their deeply ingrained belief that the name "America" was somehow ordained by God at the founding of the world.

I wonder what would happen if we tell them Colombus's name wasn't really "Christopher"...

An unveiling of a statue of Robert E. Lee is planned for next week.

[–] ramenshaman@lemmy.world 25 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I can't tell if you're joking :(

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

even if he is its far to likley a possibility with this administration. He likely wants to to insert the head of the confederacy into the pictures of presidents.

[–] obvs@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Trump's always advocated for inserting heads where they aren’t wanted.

[–] hitstun@feddit.online 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

My hometown is named after Christopher Columbus, and even we got rid of most of our statues of him years ago.

Still mad we didn't rename it to Flavortown...

Or are you from one of the minor outlying Columbuses?

[–] gnate@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

After Flavius Columbus, of course

[–] GutterRat42@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Do you live in Cincinnati!?

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 week ago

Makes sense. trump lost his way too.

[–] GutterRat42@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

To celebrate his syphilis diagnosis? I knew his brain couldn't be this naturally bad.

[–] snowcrete@lemmy.wtf 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

But… Columbus Circle is right there outside Union Station. Isn’t that enough Columbus for DC? As for the statue being from Baltimore, I’m surprised they could recover it from the Inner Harbor. What a cesspit.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Next he's gonna issue an EO to rename the city to Washington District of Columbus

[–] madeinthebackseat@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

They should put it where Columbus first set foot in what is now the United States.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

They are rubbing our faces in it.

[–] kamayatu24@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Fucking genius

[–] 6stringringer@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

I hope the artist/sculptor played the long game. When trump is out for the count perhaps the piece will rot and turn into mush, something akin to wet cardboard.

[–] crystalmerchant@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I mean he's a fine director and all, but a statue? Really? Who's next, Christopher Nolan?
