The USA has lost its status. It will never regain it because what it has become was allowed to happen, and can again.

No one will ever believe or trust the USA again

No one will ever believe or trust the USA again

It's easy to say this, but I think it's important to look at this in a big perspective. Look at Germany post WWII. In 1945, it was unthinkable that Germany would have the role in Europe that they have today. Not only that, but in my country (and plenty of other previously occupied countries), Germany and Germans are typically regarded as an important and reliable partner/ally, and a decent people.

The key here is that Germany and Germans have spent generations burning into their common ethos that something like WWII can never happen again. They've had a personal reckoning as a nation that has been noticed, to put it lightly.

If the US is ever going to be trusted again, they need an internal reckoning with what has happened. They need to show, over many years, that they're not only repenting for what has been done, but actively putting systems in place to prevent it from happening again. This doesn't happen in one or two elections. This is damage that will take decades, maybe even generations, to repair.

Not having a reckoning is nigh foundational to the U.S. at this point. kinda came close with the civil war. flirted with it at times in the 1970s. been mostly backpeddling from it since

I said that after 9/11 with the camps, legal torture and the second Iraq war. Guess every generation has this moment.

Thank you, i never remember the correct key to press to doubt.

No way the Democrats have it together enough to get even half of this stuff done before losing control again. Which assumes that they even want to do it which...

Well, I guess all of that is achievable, except the last one. You can't force trust. Everyone will know that US is forever one election away from another insane president.

the department of justice will go back to enforcing the law

Cant go back to doing something you never did in the first place. Epstein has been operational since the 00's, probably back to the 80's but history is admittedly my weak point. Trump didnt pop into existance in 2016 either.

When the pedofile leaves the office, you dumbfucks, you will just elect another fascist.

You can't guarantee you won't so why would anyone ever trust you again?

You are gaining a new status: shithole banana republic. And it's gonna take a lot for people to trust you again if it ever happens. Right now you are American Russia, except your leader is dumber than a bag of rocks.

except your leader is dumber than a bag of rocks.

C'mon.. Our figurehead is dumber than a bag of rocks. Our leaders are average intelligence and also sadists who want to terrorize the USA population into death (for the techbros/fintech) and Christo-fascism (for the Heritage Foundation).

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Sadists*, those are the ones that like to cause pain. Masochists like to be on the receiving end of punishment :)

ooh whoops! thanks "^^

It’s always far easier to destroy something than to rebuild it.

[–] blattrules@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah this is bullshit. Trump is speedrunning undoing decades of progress and the checks and balances that are supposed to prevent this kind of thing have failed. Those checks and balances are damn sure gonna be working fine if a progressive is ever able to run the country and those assholes in congress will throw the brakes on anything that’s trying to be reverted. Electing another neoliberal will stifle reverting these changes on its own. We’ll need multiple administrations of progressive president and congress along with a multiple seat change or expansion of the Supreme Court to undo this, and I don’t see that happening.

The trust is not going to come back unless we implement rules so this doesn’t happen again and even then it’ll be decades, assuming china doesn't replace us on the global scale by the time trump leaves office.

[–] Cherry@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago

There is implemented rules. But the gov is ignoring them and there is no challenge to that. I was always told that’s what Americans kept their guns. I must have misconstrued.

Your gov is lawless and quite a people support it. As above banana republic. It’s very sad but the rest of the world is wising up and adapting. Each inch of that is a loss of power for the USA. Whichever sycophant is at the top is irrelevant the world has seen the stupidity and is dealing with the consequence.

Trump was elected with a majority of the popular vote. Undoing his work will only lead to the election of another like him in short order. The USA needs a new constitutional convention that will lead to a second republic with a system different from the current one. Maintaining the current system will only lead to increasingly longer cycles of chaos followed by increasingly shorter (or less sensible) cycles of sanity.

No, he got 49.8% of the popular vote, which is under the 50% threshold for a majority. I say that not only in the "well akshually" sense, but also to agree that, yes, we need to replace our system completely. The current one is broken, if in no other way than weighting different votes very differently. (Urban vs. rural, or California vs. Wyoming)

That's if Trump leaves his office at the end of his second term. Everything points to the other direction.

[–] zout@fedia.io 1 points 1 week ago

Do you mean he isn't leaving, or he'll leave before? Because honestly, I can see either the guy getting disposed somewhere early next year, or just dropping dead to the ground any minute now with his health.

[–] Willy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

i mean some it will be true because it's a lie now.
