Just because you can hear it doesn’t mean everyone can. Beeps are interruptive too.

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 week ago (2 children)

my grandfather cant even hear the beeping, let alone if the microwave is running.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 week ago

Agreed that companies need to lower the note of their beeps to old-man hearing tones.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

they make some devices that electrocute you when running and when they're done, stop.

And increasing beeping volume would be good. First beep should be nearly muted. 4th beep should be judging.

My microwave has an option to turn off all the beeps, and it's a landlord special so I imagine others can do the same. Check your model and see if it has that option.

For mine, I literally need to hold down I think the number 3 for 5 seconds. It's in no way obvious.

Appliances should never ever beep, change my mind. What happened to the good old "bing" or "brrrrrrring"?

Beeping makes my skin crawl!

[–] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

My ADHD brain can barely remember putting something in the microwave. I need the beep to remind myself to check it

It’s probably way cheaper to add a speaker than an actual, physical bell. But I agree. My microwave dings and I’m fine with that.

Y'all better be clearing the timer so it returns to clock mode afterwards

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 week ago

Our new one has the option to not have a clock and just be blank so it’s extra annoying when somebody leaves the timer on and the screen stays on blinking ‘cook time’.

[–] Oaksey@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I’ve said it before, but they should have a time out option of say like 5 or 10 minutes, when it automatically goes back to standby.

My previous microwave oven had a mute button. That thing stayed permanently silent. Unfortunately I have never found a new model that can be muted.

Cue a Technology Connection video about how old microwave ovens were better.

I just can't wait for microwave to have an integration with AI. I just need another internet connected device that can recommend a nice laxative after scanning what it just cooked. Not only that but it could integrate with my smart fridge and make sure that it orders food that is just about to expire from Instacart. And with its partnership with Doordash, the microwave could just stop working and order a replacement meal for me.

...said no one ever.

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Many if not most microwaves can be muted, but they usually don't have a special button for it.

It's often some secret button combination. READ YOUR MICROWAVE'S MANUAL.

[–] Scubus@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Every microwave can be silenced. Sometimes it requires a soldering iron.

I've got a newer (5yo) Maytag that has a silent mode that you can choose either with end beep or without. It resets every power outage which is my only gripe.

Mine has it and is currently muted

Where's the challenge in that?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

yeah, but then it's blinking and i have to press stop to clear the blinking remaining time for the clock to display. I MUST HAVE MY CLOCK. ahem. sorry i don't have any anals that i need to retent or anything.

i once, i swear once pressed open at such a precise time i did not have to press any other buttons to get to the clock and (and this is the important bit) the microwave made no sound. i mean aside from the door clanging open and me squealing and pooting a little. it felt like i had just pumped exactly twenty moneys and i will never reach such heighths again

[–] Salamanderwizard@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Squealing and pooting?

You are a unique person.

newb. I save the world by stopping it on 0:00 before the screen goes away.

[–] night_petal@piefed.social 9 points 1 week ago

I hate it when people leave time on the microwave like this. It annoys me to no end, much more than the beep.

My wife does this... And then doesn't clear the timer. Ever. Not once. Fucking annoying.

More kitchen devices need to follow what ricecookers are doing and play a charming melody when finished.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

As far as I can tell thats a Korean appliance thing, so maybe try an LG or Samsung microwave.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Japan likes that stuff too. As far as I can tell if you really wanted to you could get pretty much everything in your house to play music at you.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

That sounds like some nightmares I’ve had.

Every time I think I am special, I find out there are a gazillion people like me.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Mine doesn't have a way to disable the beep so I opened up the case and de-beeped it by desoldering the piezo.

[–] Fleur_@aussie.zone 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Skill issue. Its possible to open it at exactly 0 seconds and it won't beep

I found out my microwave has a mute function. That's my discovery of the year

[–] spicytuna62@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Honestly, though, if a stopwatch counts milliseconds, I'm gonna see how close to 0 I can get without letting it hit 0

[–] jeffep@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Do you set the timer to 61s as well?

[–] Ghostie@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I had a microwave that not only beeped when finished but also beeped every 10-15 seconds if the door wasn’t opened and food retrieved. I donated it and bought a new one because I wasn’t about to put up with that audacity.
