I've got a bare metal instance of Ubuntu Server running on an old Mac Mini.
i use Ubuntu + docker
I almost entirely run Ubuntu server VMs within proxmox.
I run a proxmox VM for Stable Diffusion but that's about all I use Ubuntu for
I do, and actually loads of people do
Unless you like a random or are a hardcore enterprise Linux enthusiast which just means RHEL or it’s clones… you run Ubuntu or Debian
All Ubuntu Server at home. Been running it for many years, got tired of compiling applications on my previous distributions.
That is really all I use on my proxmox VMs.
I run a VMware stack and unraid in my lab. Most of my servers are linux servers. My containers stay on unraid. Storage is mostly synology and a little bit on unraid.
Ubuntu is my go to distro when setting up a linux server.
It has some issues and I don't love everything about it. But the documentation and community is why I stay. I could load up any iso and bang my head against an issue and eventually figure it out. Or I could use ubuntu and use the thousands of guides available.
At work I use red hat. Vender documentation is good and red hat is a solid platform. I am not particularly happy with them and their licensing issues but since I'm not paying the bill I don't really care.
For Linux OS, always Ubuntu Server. Most clients I work with run it also.
Definitely. Almost all my servers are Ubuntu server. Both personally as for my business.
I do.
Ubuntu + docker + portainer
Wow, the amount of people running Ubuntu here actually surprises me.
I run CentOS almost exclusively, but I also run quite a few LXC containers on my Proxmox cluster.
I have dozens of Ubuntu servers in action
Nowadays i never use it anymore. back in the day it was nice Debian but with more up to date packages. Nowadays it’s a lot of post-install management to do because it installed the snap version of stuff u didn’t want.
Now for me it’s mainly RHEL/Rocky
I use it as my hypervisor. I installed Cockpit to manage VMs via libvirt with a GUI. It doesn't really do much besides be a hypervisor, All of my containers are running on one of the guest VMs
Ubuntu is my OS of choice for docker hosting.
Nah. Debian for servers.
I use Ubuntu on my Proxmox VM's and containers.
I do, locally and in the cloud 🤷♂️
I used to use it until this year. I've switched over to vanilla Debian.
Ubuntu LTS was what I used. I had more ansible playbooks to de-ubuntu them than I had to configure stuff. Ubuntu likes to invent stuff for no reason, make you use it, then abandon it years later.
Debian for me on all VMs and all servers that do not run a hypervisor. Can’t stand the snaps that Ubuntu introduced in a very aggressive and intrusive way. Don’t need a GUI either so Debian is a natural choice for me. Pro tip for non critical services: Enable the backports repository to get modern packages with recent versions. I’ve never encountered a problem, but still would not recommend it for a mission critical service.
I use proxmox and have ubuntu server doing both my portainer load out and anything else I need. So yeah people use it.
Of my 13 running VMs, nine are Ubuntu server (mostly 20.04). Three are Oracle Linux and one Rocky Linux.
I have 3 or so servers using ubuntu server. 2x nas and a VM with a bunch of the 'arrs'. All the rest are debian. when I first started out years ago, I didn't really know the difference, but I prefer the smaller install size and stability of debian now.
Is it weird I use windows server 2016?
Ubuntu is fine, but I use Debian for everything because it is rock fucking solid.
I'm running ~2400 Ubuntu server vms on vmware. They are running various workload environments that I use for testing and learning.
I use Ubuntu server exclusively. I invested in knowlegde for Ubuntu server os. It just works
Not at home, but at uni my compute "node" runs Ubuntu server.
I have actually used it way back 2010 in production to run KVM to virtualize some windows servers.
Prior to that it was my home OS desktop for several years.
I did up until i got really sick of netplan and stuff.
all of my servers are now on debian and they've been great.
I mean... Its my preferred linux distribution for servers.
At least- the minified version.
I use it on my prodmox server. Currently I think I have 5 VMs on it. Currently pihole, docker and three in a k3s cluster.
Ubuntu server is my distro of choice, mostly beacuse i have used it for so long and it runs good for me so no need to change :D
I have been using ubuntu server since it came out. Now with ubuntu moves to snap, I have been moving to debian.
It’s great for Apache and stuff like Unifi Controllers.
My NAS is Ubuntu Server running SnapRaid and MergerFS.
I use it to host VMware Workstation. Originally started with Proxmox but I had more experience with VMware so I decided to go that route. Works for what I need. Using Packer to create my images and use Vagrant to manage the building and breakdown of my lab.
I use two ububtu servers at home. At work, I have two for non-critical things that are not public facing. For our exposed web servers, I use cloudlinux.
Yeppers
I used to just use Debian but I tried Ubuntu like 6 months ago after not using it for probably 3-4 years and it's grown on me and I like it again.
Ubuntu + Cockpit + KVM + Podman. A multi-vlan netplan config was a beast to come up with but after that it's my preferred hypervisor.
I don't physically home lab (tiny apartment with a partner who doesn't like fan noise) - but my virtual home lab (AWS) is all Ubuntu server. It's been my flavour of choice for almost 20 years.
