Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

If you're already naked in the forest your partner can at least thoroughly check you for ticks :3

And eating the ticks provides protein for extra stamina.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 weeks ago

To avoid blood borne illnesses please only eat ticks on other species of animals.

[–] Gutek8134@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Peak reference?

If, like me, you actually live in the forest and DO NOT want ticks, hear me out:

TICK TUBES. LOTS OF THEM. RIGHT NOW!

https://www.thermacell.com/products/tick-control-tubes

Also: nighly tick check for the whole family. You do NOT want Lyme disease

[–] merde@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

we have lizards which I've learned are one of the principle hosts of ticks. Lizards won't "collect the treated cotton and use it to line their nests." :(

[–] nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 1 points 2 weeks ago

Lizards mean you live in a warmer clime than me. Which means you have bugs the likes of which I do not even want to know...

[–] mbp@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah back in FL no simple product can keep ticks away

[–] Kanda@reddthat.com 1 points 1 week ago

I always just wait until it itches and then pull them off.

The season for walking around city and meowing at random people is right now. Go outside and meow

[–] UnGlazedGarlic@lemmy.blahaj.zone 20 points 2 weeks ago

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

I’ve seen cat ear headphone people doing this. Is this a TikTok trend or something?

[–] Una@europe.pub 12 points 2 weeks ago

Idk, I do that on my own because I'm bored.

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 weeks ago

It’s called being a silly kitty mrroooowww :3

[–] cloudskater@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

[–] festnt@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 weeks ago

[–] MeatPilot@sh.itjust.works 19 points 2 weeks ago
[–] Berengaria_of_Navarre@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Lol, I'm too far north for ticks.

[–] morto@piefed.social 29 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Climate change: hold my beer

Actually there have been very occasional cases, but they're rare enough to make it into the paper. The fact that the snow is already almost melted here doesn't bode well for the future :(

[–] merde@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Ticks have even been found in Antarctica, where they feed on penguins.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tick

if they can go that "far south", i'm sure they are already where you are.

[–] ShouldIHaveFun@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

Ticks can live in cold places, but the diseases they transmit don't propagate if the ticks are inactive for long enough in the winter. Ticks themselves are harmless, only the diseases they transmit are a problem

[–] mbp@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

If they are talking about the Willamette Valley, there is a natural barrier preventing ticks from making it in ( cascade mountain range on all sides, Columbia River to the north )

Ticks will need to be introduced. It is bound to happen eventually but for now there are areas without ticks that latch onto humans.

babesiosis, rocky mountain spotted fever, and alpha gal syndrome.

[–] islandcoda42@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

Where I live, restaurants have an “alpha gal” menu (eastern MA)

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Thanks, I hate bugs so so much. Where's that nuclear war and/or global warming?

[–] bootleg@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Don't worry, those fuckers will find a way to survive through anything.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

But what if I start eating them?

[–] anton@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 weeks ago

You are unique and there are so many of them...

[–] jimothysupreme@lemmy.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

Swipe right on Buzzer!

[–] demlet@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

That really is all it is... 🤔

Idk why, but this kind of reply implying that some being has typed the OP to lure people in, is so fucking funny to me.
