They last around 5 years. But id rather buy a new model every 2 - 3 years so it doesn’t lose much value. I like it this way because I can get a discount on the purchase with the older phone value.

I upgrade my phone unless something happens to it. I’ve had the base iPhone 13 for almost a year now and so far no complaints from me ❤️. Hopefully it will last me for at least 4 or 5 years

I won't debate that the longer you keep it, the more you get your money's worth, but a couple months ago, I did try to figure this out from a trade in perspective, so here you go...

A one year old Pro is worth $570 for trade in with Apple

A two year old Pro is worth $480 for trade in with Apple

A three year old Pro is worth $360 for trade in with Apple

With AT&T a one and two year old Pro (and 3 year old Max) trade in is worth $1000, and a 3 year old Pro trade in is worth $830

I upgrade every 2 years. But I’m fancy.

[–] manwidplan83@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

A new pro max every year. Just kidding. I just upgraded from my 12 pro max to my 15 pro max.

But then again I’m not a very tech savvy 40 year old dude.

If I had a podcast, I was a content creator or influencer I probably would get a new one yearly.

You can get away with 5+ but you lose performance relative to what’s new. in my opinion every 3-5 model years is perfect.

[–] SaverPro@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m a heavy user that works in the technology sector. I can easily get 3 years out of mine. But for the average user you can probably get 4-5 years without noticing any big slowdowns or issues. Now. I would personally recommend to change the batter at some point between 2-3 years.

I would say about 4 years if you want to see some decent upgrades. It’s very boring to buy them each year now given how little things change in an iPhone

Went from 7 to 13 pro. Will likely upgrade when the 18 comes around.

I’ve settled in nicely after three years. I’m a very heavy user, so after three years, the speed and battery improvements are well worth it.

[–] lustforwine@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

3-4 for me after battery slows and phone slows

[–] xnaveedhassan@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If by new you mean the latest, 4-5 years.

[–] Morrow116@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’ll let you know when my SE dies!

[–] fatbird09@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m using an iPhone 8 plus since 2018. Haven’t had a real urge to upgrade yet. Only when it stops working, will I.

[–] Choppo87@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

meh 2-3 yrs

[–] Just-Keep_Dreaming@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

6 or when it breaks

[–] hotcoolhot@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

3-4, if you need features, 4-5 when things start falling apart

[–] karlkot@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I just upgraded to IPhone 15 Pro Max from a iPhone 7 Plus (2016).

[–] CautiousSeaweed6938@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago
[–] AcademicExercise4034@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

At least 3.

[–] Cultural-Ad2334@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Every 3 years

[–] elixrdev@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Do you want the latest features? Go ahead get the new one.

Do you want a phone that just works? I'm still using the SE 2016 as my primary.

Do you want to get the best experience at a good cost? Try to get the last 3 to 4 generations.

I used my iPhone 8 Plus for 4.5 years before buying 14 pro. Have kept the 8 plus as backup and it still looks marvellous and is fully functional.

[–] damnedcaptain@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I got a 12 when they first came out. Just got a 15. Literally the only reason I upgraded was for USB C. The 15 I’ll probably keep until it’s no longer supported or it dies. Whichever happens first. Unless there’s a feature you want, there’s no point in upgrading every year.

[–] skynet_root@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I upgraded from an iPhoneX to iPhone15, since Apple did not allow the IPhoneX to get iOS 17, which prevented me from running my work’s Microsoft 365, since they make iOS 17 a minimum requirement.

[–] Xeon2k8@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Why do you need to use your personal phone for work ?

[–] Puzzleheaded68@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If I'm buying the last iPhone, I wouldn't think of an upgrade until at least 3-4 years.

[–] gtgcya@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

5+ years. iPhones tend to have great update cycles albeit they might not perform as well in the later half of their lifecycles.

[–] moonisflat@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Until you don’t get security updates.

[–] PinoyDadInOman@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My iPhone 7 plus still good, I just need to have the back camera fixed. It developed a Parkinson's disease or somehow my wife's vibrator software update was directed to the camera firmware.

But if some good soul will donate a new iPhone, I'll make my 7 plus a piece of art.

[–] bdar1993@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I always look after mine and went from XS Max to 14Max which seemed like a good step in performance and time. So 3-4 years

[–] Shoshin_Sam@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

When essential banking apps start to not support older iOS. Say 7-8 years.

[–] Maikuljay@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago
[–] beautifulafro@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

4s —> 8 —> XS —> 14

Note that my XS got stolen, hence my quick replacement

I only change a new phone if they bring a brand new huge changes

[–] gunbuster363@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago
[–] B17BAWMER@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

6 or so years.

[–] anderssi@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

When it no longer functions.

[–] Deet98@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

You can push to 3/4 years easily nowadays. I had the 12 pro and it was ok, only the battery life sucked and now that I switched to 15 pro I notice a big difference in speed and battery. Also the camera is the one who gets the huge improvements, but I personally don’t care that much about that.
