With a battery change, possibly like 5-6 years.

I had my 11 Pro Max for 4 years and the battery health was 80%. The lag was becoming unbearable. Only reason I went for a trade-in over replacing the battery is 64gb just wasn’t cutting it anymore. I held out a little too long in my opinion, so I’m gonna go with like 3 years if you don’t plan on replacing the battery.

For me when IOS updates are not supported anymore. The huge lags that were present 10 years ago on older devices are mostly gone, so no reason for me to replace earlier than that.

Depends on the finance and country you live in. For where I live, we can do monthly contract and upgrade plan which lets you upgrade to new iPhone with a small monthly fee.

But looking for line up, I would say 3-5 years are good. iPhone X to iPhone 11 Pro Max is first gap. iPhone 12 Pro Max to iPhone 15 Pro Max would be another gap. I would say 15 pro max is the best upgrade to make, comparing to other models. 14 pro max was very heavy and not much change. Same goes for 12,13 pro max

When you feel like it’s time to switch it up.

[–] kandaq@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

When Apple stops providing updates or in the case of my watch after the battery health went down below 80% as we don’t have watch battery replacement here. My watch is S4 and it just reached 5 years now.

These days they are pretty much all just minor incremental upgrades.

Buy one. Use it until it’s buggered, then replace it, probably with last year’s model because Apple sell those cheaper.

3 seems like a decent number to me at this point. You still get a decent amount for it on trade in and you get enough new stuff. A few years ago the number was lower but there’s just not much changing anymore

Well before this one, I wanted a new phone everytime a new one came out, but always got a phone 2 years later. But now I’m starting to not be so materialistic about it, especially with how 1. Phones are super expensive, 2. If the device is working fine no need to get a new one. So I’m happy with the new mind set I have. I will be happily keeping this phone until it’s no longer support, or it breaks (but I have AC+)

Using ip11 and wont change it for 2 more years i hope

I got an iPhone 7 in 2017 Not getting a 15 pro in 2023

[–] EdRed_77@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It used to be 2 years until I upgraded from a XR to a 13 and the difference wasn't that big. I think this time I won't be getting a new iPhone until at least the 16 comes out. I just don't feel like I need to.

[–] StalinTheHedgehog@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I guess it depends. I have the iPhone 11 and had no thoughts of switching, but I’m tempted because my phone doesn’t support 5G and the volume on phone calls is after getting pretty bad.

[–] YK8099@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

5years at least

[–] chichikabour@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Not less than 3

You don’t buy an iPhone. What you do is pay a fee that only covers the serviceable warranty on the phone so you pay for apple care. That’s it. The phone itself is worthless

I keep my iPhones for 3 years, and then upgrade to the current latest model after it’s been out for about 3 months.

My favourite phone was the iPhone 7, but it drowned this year so im using the iPod and iPhone 6.

[–] UniversityNo633@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I replace whenever my phone starts heavily glitching or lagging. I find this is normally after 2-3 major updates

[–] _dmhg@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I like 5-6 years when the phone no longer supports new software updates. I got the X in 2017 and then just this month finally upgraded to the 15!

[–] electric-sheep@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

When it starts being too slow to serve its purpose. For me its a work communicator mostly. If apps take ages to load or start crashing then its time for a new phone.

4 years on the 11 pro max and still rock solid performance.

[–] Hubris1998@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

3 years seems to be the sweet spot

2 to 4 years

[–] dickmcgirkin@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Just do the program with your carrier to get a new iPhone every year. 🤷🏻‍♂️. I pay ummm. 40 a month for my phone to have the new one every 12 months

[–] zhemer86@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m just over 5 years and I’m going to give it another year or 2.

[–] NESpahtenJosh@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I just went from an iPhone 8 to an iPhone 14 and honestly... I notice almost no difference on day to day stuff.

Sure.. bigger screen, higher refresh, etc. But in terms of what the phone does for me? Nothing different.

So as long as you can until Apple forces your hands really.

[–] Luna-Honey@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

About four years

[–] Bel5nickel@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago
[–] pokemon2jk@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Usually 3-4 years as battery wears out and cannot hold charge

[–] ToffeeCoffee@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I'd say after one official battery change at Apple - original batt and reasealing the phone. Each battery should last you 2+ years, so you'd get 5+ years out of the phone.

I'd say that's a good balance of device price + battery replacement price for a lifespan usage of 5 years, instead of 2x device price for example.

[–] IncoherentPenguin@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I went from my XR to a 15 Pro Max. I decided to make the move only because of the usb c connection. I wanted as my of my devices to use it as possible. Less stuff to carry around. BTW Unless you have small hands this you’ll find yourself enjoying the bigger real estate offered.

[–] Parthurnax52@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

To me it very much depends if the phone has enough features that distinguish my current phone with the latest model. Usually that takes 4-5 years

[–] agentmikeyd@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago
[–] apitchf1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I used to be on the two year cycle but now I do about three. Feels like enough to have moderate upgrades. Could probably even go to four, I usually upgrade for the great trade in deal and they seem to go back about 4-5 generations with same trade in value

[–] JamesF555@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I say run it to the ground, then buy the second newest model.

[–] 2spiritAirplane@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have a hack I upgrade my iPhone for free each year so yeah.

Only works in third world countries though.

[–] Generaldar@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I buy used or broken so I can repair it

[–] RacerCG_Reddit@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Depends. For most people who aren't smartphone enthusiasts, I agree with the roughly 4-5 year upgrade cycle. If you're into tech and like having the latest and greatest, maybe 2-3 years. Upgrading every year is excessive IMHO.

[–] pogituna16@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

until its not supported anymore

[–] TimeWrangler4279@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago
[–] PinkLemonade30@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I just got a basic pink IPhone 15. I want to keep it forever 😭

[–] Legendary87@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I just upgraded from SE2 to 15 Pro. My old phone battery could barely last a day whereas the 15 Pro has been great. I expect to have this for at least 3 years.
