Why would they join the war that is already won?

[–] NeptuneOrbit@lemmy.world 55 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Victory has many fathers. Defeat is a gosh gallop of roping in allies, obscuring facts and blaming Joe Biden.

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 23 points 2 weeks ago

To win the war he already won. How is that confusing?

I thought he didn't need our ships for a war already won.

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 56 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The only official response to him from the UK should be the direct quote about not needing the UK. No additional words. Don't take any words out. Just the exact quote.

[–] justOnePersistentKbinPlease@fedia.io 26 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Starmer will say no, only in defence, then give Trump everything he wants.

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Then the UK has a problem to deal with as well.

Ready in Canada if our government decides to help Trump out. Don't care which team he's on.

“That’s OK, Prime Minister Starmer, we don’t need them any longer — But we will remember. We don’t need people that join Wars after we’ve already won!”

Huh.

"We don't need your ships"

24 hours later...

"Please send your ships"

"BTW, we already won the war, but please help"

The infinite might of the United States is unable to hold and defend a 24-mile wide body of water.

Think about that for a second.

[–] certified_expert@lemmy.world 29 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

“We have already destroyed 100 per cent of Iran’s military capability, but it’s easy for them to send a drone or two, drop a mine, or deliver a close-range missile somewhere along, or in, this waterway, no matter how badly defeated they are.”

In what appeared to be an appeal to the UK and other nations, he added: “Hopefully China, France, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and others, that are affected by this artificial constraint will send ships to the area so that the Hormuz Strait will no longer be a threat by a nation that has been totally decapitated.”

Mr Trump struck a markedly different tone from when, earlier this month, he accused Sir Keir of joining the conflict after the US had already claimed victory, suggesting the US no longer needed UK assistance.

“The United Kingdom, our once Great Ally, maybe the Greatest of them all, is finally giving serious thought to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East,” Mr Trump wrote earlier in March. “That’s OK, Prime Minister Starmer, we don’t need them any longer – But we will remember. We don’t need people that join Wars after we’ve already won!”

"I want Greenland! Give me Greenland, or I'll go to war with Europe! Give me what I want OR ELSE! "

3 months later:

"You better help me save face from my virtuosically incompetent war strategy OR ELSE!"

Would love for a country to just ask a billion dollar per day, paid in advance, for any help. Art of the deal and all that.

[–] grte@lemmy.ca 25 points 2 weeks ago (5 children)

I don't have a lot of faith that a worm like Kier Starmer won't fold after Trump yells at him a bit.

[–] biscuit@lemdro.id 19 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

There's no way Starmer pulls us into this war, given the current political climate in the UK.

The two far-right party leaders called to join the war in Iran as soon as it started - they've both had to backpedal now due to the UK public categorically not supporting the war.

It's given Starmer some much-needed good press. His actions on the world stage have been consistently brilliant and I don't see that stopping yet. He should be able to keep our noses clean during this, but I suspect we'll be hit with the recession regardless.

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 13 points 2 weeks ago (5 children)

You forget that Starmer loves shooting himself in tbe foot and hates good press

Fuck off loser.

[–] metermatic26@lemmy.world 24 points 2 weeks ago

This is the same country that was seriously planning to invade and annex Greenland just three months ago. They might have postponed their plans in favor of bombing Iran, but Greenland is still on the table.

So Europe may suffer the economic consequences of this mess, but the White House getting humiliated and the US military getting degraded and bogged down in Iran are both a boon for Europe.

My only fear that some European leaders (looking at you Starmer) might actually be stupid enough to follow them in this folly out of some misplaced sense of appeasement.

He does command the - by far - biggest navy in the world. If he can't fight the war he started to distract from the Epstein files, he calls others, who have nothing to do with it, to do his dirty work and get the blame.

Sane-washing title

the US president urged Britain and other nations – including France, China and Japan – to send warships to the area to protect oil tankers from Iranian attacks.

Not a good sign if we are asking China to change our diaper.

Just one week ago he "truthed":

The United Kingdom, our once Great Ally, maybe the Greatest of them all, is finally giving serious thought to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East. That’s OK, Prime Minister Starmer, we don’t need them any longer — But we will remember. We don’t need people that join Wars after we’ve already won!

What? Wasn't already won one week ago, and no help was needed? Now it needs to beg for help?

[–] ranzispa@mander.xyz 15 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

According to the article, this is what he said:

Hopefully China, France, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and others, that are affected by this artificial constraint will send ships to the area so that the Hormuz Strait will no longer be a threat by a nation that has been totally decapitated.

How does that turn into this?

Donald Trump pleads for UK to send warships to secure Strait of Hormuz

Donald Trump is just trying to drag everyone down with him.

[–] Jaybird@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

He should be pleading. But he is demanding. That's the weird part. He does not have the cards for demanding.

You break it, you own it. He attacked, without reason. Hell! According to them its not even a war. Get congress to declare war first, then we talk.

I submit the following: an oil shock and the resultant recession/depression is worth enduring so that the world may be rid of Trump. Let the idiot wear his blunder, and may the economic disaster he unleashed be forever known as the Trump Slump. The alternative might be WW3.

One thing, though: we must help Ukraine defeat Putin. Russia is getting a huge boost right now from Trumps's blunder. If the UK and others send ships anywhere, it should be to blockade Russia.

The problem with the American military doctrine, is that they don't have one; everytime they need to fight a war, they find somebody else to be the troops while they stick to a "support" role.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Why? Because the U.S. decommissioned most of its purpose-built minesweepers?

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 13 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Because Israel and USA run out of ammo if Iran doesn't surrender soon and then they're really up shit creek.
