Still 8gb ram on the $1599 14” 😭

[–] alicia-indigo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’ve been a big fan for decades but I’m really tired of this. My iCloud went down for an entire day a couple weeks ago and they wasted my time on the support line only to eventually say “oh I see what’s up, we can’t tell you but just wait twelve hours and it will work again.” I don’t know what’s going on with this company but the software is getting bad and their hardware configs are ridiculous. Any good recommendations on powerful laptops for if I want to jump ship?

[–] RedofPaw@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

You know the truth. 8gb is for people who just want a mac for light stuff like typing or browsing. You are meant to pay more if you want more. 8gb is pitched to be functional for those who don't care, and fir those that do care? You pay more.

[–] rdjg22@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

People still think of RAM like it's the early 2000's. Hasn't been much of a factor since M1. It's just overanalyzing, fomo BS YouTubers create, and ironically could create on a base MBA.

[–] real_with_myself@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

And it will still sell like hotcakes.

[–] afCeG6HVB0IJ@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The mac I bought in 2012 had 16 GB of RAM.

[–] PlasmaCutter53@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Is the jump from Pro to Max worth it for me? Only graphically intensive stuff I will do is WoW and Baldurs Gate 3.

I’d like to play both in max settings, can the pro handle it or is a max required?

[–] whereismyface_ig@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

are any of the macbook pros more powerful than the maxed out Mac Studio?

[–] mgwair11@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Leave it Apple to release 3nm laptops starting with 8 Gb of ram in 2023. Holy shitballs.

[–] JonathanJK@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

If Apple are going to nickel and dime me, I will nickel and dime them by never paying for a new machine again. I have an M1 Pro now (second hand $300 off with 2 battery charges at the time [unwanted corporate purchase]), it's totally fine for my needs and my last laptop lasted 8 years (rMBP 2012). I can easily wait 6 more years and by then pick up somebody else's used M3 or M4 with an upgraded SSD and RAM. Fuck Apple pricing.

Ok, this my be a rant, but on the new space black color, I think it looks better than the other choices, but it's still not what I want. I just wish Apple would give the pro models the same colorways as the iMac. I've always disliked how the lower end devices for most brands come in fun and interesting colors, and the pro models come in boring white, gray, and black only. I would snap up a pink mbp right away! I'm sure a lot of people would buy higher end devices in fun colors, but companies still think lack of color = device now looks premium. Well, if I'm paying more money to get a more powerful device, give me my colors for that price darn it! Can't people want a powerful device that comes in a fun color too? Samsung has their z flip line have fun colors for example. I got the pink version, and I'd consider it a premium product...

“Not a fan of the Galaxy”… I see what you did there, Apple.

[–] tablepennywad@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Are these m3 based on A17?

[–] FrontFocused@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I wish I could just make a decision in my mind about 18gb vs 36gb for Lightroom and light - medium 4k Final Cut Pro editing.

[–] Supermonkeyjam@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I can see the vision pro allowing someone with the m3 max display those extra monitor support in mix reality on site

[–] jjheel13@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If I just bought a M2 14”MBP like 3 weeks ago, would it be worth it to return it for the new M3 14”?

[–] VampyreOfNazareth@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Buzzwords will eventually tank the brand.

[–] hrrsnjms@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Can’t wait give up my freelance creative work so I no longer feel crap about not having all the latest gear.

[–] HarambesLaw@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I remember going to the store when the m1 came out and thought it was a joke they had a 512 ssd model

[–] CuriousWhale2@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Am I the only one who was kind of hoping that when the fog cleared it was the reanimated corpse of Steve Jobs? Felt like the best opportunity they’ve had

[–] paulodelgado@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Idk man… my 2015 MacBook Pro still works great. Especially since I installed Debian on it.

[–] CyberAsura@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

16% faster Neural Engine than M2

If only I can actually feel the difference in real world usage

[–] youlinter@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

M3 and 8gb ram, effing hell is Apple smoking. Who the hell will get that in 2023 instead waiting for the improved Air?

I’m so upset. I bought a M2 Max MacBook Pro back in January when it came out. And then they do this.

Yes, I should be used to it by now, but they should at least offer an upgrade possibility since it hasn’t even been a full calendar year 😭😭😭

Why did they obsolesce the M2 Max within the same year??

[–] vincentofearth@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Can someone tell me how well these chips perform in gaming? I have an M1 mini and it can run RimWorld pretty well. I read that M2 chips can run older AAA titles decently. Are the M3 chips able to realistically run AAA games? (taking into account the quality of ports and/or overhead from emulation)

[–] unknown-one@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

r/macgaming it does pretty well, even with new AAA games

8gb ram ar 1999€. I cant do that I just cant. Looks like anothrr skip, maybe they will stop being so fcking greedy with M4

[–] nothingexceptfor@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

8gb of ram still ruins it, no matter how fast the chip is, still bottle necked, on purpose

[–] LittleKitty235@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It’s to keep the price under $2k. If the minimum was 16gb and the min price went up people would be complaining also.

I don’t get it, factor in the additional cost. Not sure how it is ruined for you

Can it handle 'heavy' 3D work?

Unreal engine 5 (lumen, nanite, raytracing etc.) Blender (cycles, optix, raytracing etc.)

[–] NewCenter@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Hype! Gonna grab foods and drinks for week long urban camping trip 😉

[–] SirDale@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My guess - next version of the OS won't support any intel macs.

There was a lot of "if you have an intel mac, this would be a great upgrade"

I don't think they could quietly signal that any louder.

[–] relevant__comment@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Imagine shelling out $1000+ for 8GB of non-upgradeable RAM….

[–] hosehead27@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It was hilarious how they kept comparing it to the M1, not the M2.

[–] sylfy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m curious why they would only include AV1 decode and not encode. Considering that creatives are supposed to be a significant part of their target audience, I would’ve assumed that AV1 hardware encode would’ve been pretty valuable.

[–] ReefJR65@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Oh look the same product just more expensive!

[–] CrazeRage@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Chip prices are expected to rise as well. Next gen stuff is going to be so expensive holy shit... Also this just means find M2 stuff if you're looking to buy, right?

[–] Rwm148731@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Which model is the pick of the bunch? Is there a performance difference between 14/16 with same hardware? Thanks in advance!
