Towin Mak, a representative from the educator center that owned the robot, explained to TDM that the incident happened as the robot was leaving the area. The woman stopped in the middle of the walkway to check her phone, and because the robot couldn’t get around, it simply waited behind her, he claimed. That’s when she noticed the robot with its lights on, startling her, given the late hour.

If I discovered a robot standing silently behind me on the street, I would also have a lil' freakout

If you get a chance, play Robo Recall on VR. Scared thr shit out of me.

[–] its_kim_love@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago

A truly formative VR experience.

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 3 points 2 weeks ago

My freakout would be "oh, this is so cool!"

Sounds like it's a glorified Marty from the grocery store. Just grumble and go around it. Also, pay attention.

[–] protist@retrofed.com 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Why would you go around it when it's behind you? 🤔

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

After you notice it. She did eventually notice it. But I'm speaking generally about these things malfunctioning or even doing what they're supposed to do and wait for you, the obstruction. Maybe this situation isn't exactly like the grocery store robot.

If it resists, will they throw it to the ground and keep smashing it with a baton until they can get the arms into handcuffs?

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 30 points 2 weeks ago

No, because it's the property of a business.

That’s why they paint them white

[–] Vinylraupe@lemmy.zip 15 points 2 weeks ago

Wouldnt tasering him be fatal?

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 17 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Probably just juice him into an unstoppable killing rage.

[–] Vinylraupe@lemmy.zip 19 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I guess since Robots feel no pain the police has no joy in using violence anyways 😔

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago

They'll just keep beating them anyway, and complain about how it isn't satisfying any more, and they need more purpose in their life.

There's countries with well-trained police.

[–] nutbutter@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 weeks ago

Where? Which is the lucky country?

[–] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You don't get training at work to not be a sadist. That's a mental health issue.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

If the environment is shit, you attract the shitheads the other shit environment raised (and also makes your environment shit). That's a negative cycle.

only if it hits two components wired to an important circuit. otherwise it would just short circuit the taser, interfere with a dispensable component or do nothing, if it hits insulating parts.

I would definitely be talking about the safety of these humanoid robots operating in public spaces. Like, I'm not worried it's gonna turn evil and be like "KILL. ALL. HUMANS!" but like, the ones I've seen are pretty fucking janky and could potentially bug out and start flailing around and hurt someone unintentionally.

Bite my shiny metal ass

So who called the police? Also the supposed freaked out last stayed around to yell and rant at the robot. Id you’re really scared you’d leave.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Fight and flight are both valid and common fear responses.
