Hope a two part question is allowed but after mostly lurking a lot, I'm noticing that there do seem to be quite a lot of Xennials. But on the other hand, also plenty of rebellious youth.

In my mind I'm thinking that Lemmy userbase is (very broadly generalizing) dividing into people who saw internet's early days and as such, aren't scared of the slight technical hurdles to enter. They tend to be a bit worldweary but Lemmy does feel a bit more like OG internet, which they like (this is me). But also, there's younger people who are techy enough to deal with the hurdles too but see using Lemmy as a sort of an act of rebellion against the mainstream internet (which I appreciate).

That said I feel like the two clash a lot since the former tends to have fewer shits to give than the latter. As often is the case in the whole history of humanity.

Obviously there's plenty of people who don't fall into either camps, which is why I'm curious. Lemmy is small enough to have a sense that there are actual, real, individual people here, as opposed to Reddit's amorphous blob of a massive userbase most of whom seem like bots.

In my 40's. Got permabanned for stating pedophiles should be killed.

41, came to Lemmy during the API thing.

I think I’m pretty rare on Lemmy: I use Windows on my PC (although I’ve dabbled in Linux) and I don’t work in a tech field at all.

I'm 30. Came here after Reddit perma-banned me and this was recommended as an alternative. Found an app that basically makes it look like Reddit so it was easy to transfer over.

I'm 22 and I came to Lemmy after my Reddit account got permanently banned/suspended for no reason

[–] SpamTabulosa@feddit.uk 3 points 2 weeks ago

Early 50's. Came here to step out of the tentacles of billionaire-led corporations and avoid an enshitified online world of bots and data harvesting. Small learning curve to gain access but will worth it.

[–] Alsjemenou@lemy.nl 2 points 2 weeks ago

Xennial here. I despise enshittification, so I wanted some kind of alternative to reddit. I still need to set it up a bit better, but whatever.

I still read reddit through a reddit viewer, but no longer participate.

40s. Pretty much the same as a lot of folks, grew tired of the Reddit bot-verse as well as kept getting banned for encouraging Shermination and posting pictures of Mussolini’s hanging corpse. Not incredibly tech savvy, but yeah, closing in on 30yrs of being on the internet. I still remember the first time I ever logged on. It was at a friend’s house, he went into a chatroom, someone sent us incest themed porn and asked if we want to roleplay a dirty Peter Pan and Wendy chat. Welcome to the internet!

"We don't have enough personal data points from fediverse users to track consumer data points"

"...I know. I'll just ask them to give me their personal info. Trust me, this always works."

"No way. They care about their anonymity, it's the reason a lot of them are there."

40s

Reddit's API BS was part of it, but the bigger issue is the increasing number of suspensions and bans for completely innocent stuff, just because it pisses off Nazis. Recently I got a 3 day account ban because I said that ICE is racist. Before that I got my post deleted and an official warning because I said something about the Trump admin firing missiles at fishing boats being a bad thing (I don't remember what I said exactly, and they deleted the post so I can't check).

  1. Reddit banned me for being pro-ukraine
[–] sneakypersimmon@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago

Late 30s. First poked around lemmy with the Reddit API changes, fully switched over after I was banned for an anti-Israel comment.

mid 40s. Xennial. I'm here because i didn't care when reddit's automod:

flagged my speech as violent for saying shit likeEat the Rich! and also i was posting my favorite luigis
and i just said pfff whatever its a stupid bot, and apparently after like 10 of those they kick you or something idk. but like the people here (besides me, i'm an ass) are generally nice and that's cool. better than the last place.

Lemmy is small enough to have a sense that there are actual, real, individual people here, as opposed to Reddit’s amorphous blob of a massive userbase most of whom seem like bots.

that is why i like it here. i see the same names often enough to remember people, like whats Their face with the capitalized pronouns

Late 40s. Left Reddit after it became clear what they had become; joined Lemmy to ask an obscure question about Selenium.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Late 30s; got tired of getting constantly banned for every god damn thing. When they killed off my favorite reddit app that was the last straw.

Fuck reddit and fuck that little pedophile Spez.

Like 2-3 years old (as of 2026)
I was unhappy with Reddit's userbase(before i cared about company track records), and i randomly stumbled across lemmy.(ion remember how)
The small size makes finding communities hard but its workable.

59, been on Mastodon for years, saw the occasional mention of Lemmy and came over for a look some time ago to lemmy.world, then to the instance I'm on now. Also have a piefed alter and the original .world alter.

Spend more time here than on Mastodon these days, I find the shitposting here is if a higher equality.

Had used reddit in the way distant past but it annoyed me the usenet structure was being centralised and replicated for $ off the back of "slaves" and left way back.

[–] Katrisia@lemmy.today 1 points 2 weeks ago

Early 30s. API debacle.

[–] TheV2@programming.dev 1 points 2 weeks ago

Age: 9.6 - 10

I created an account at lemmy.ml, because I was interested in seeing real-world examples of Rust in production. Shortly after that, due to the death of Reddit 3rd party API, I began to spend more time in Lemmy.
