Down there with solar roadways.

Ah, yes, solar roadways: because everybody knows the best thing to do with your (relatively, compared to asphalt or concrete) expensive and fragile electronics is to drive cars on them! And the best place for a flat panel that provides shade and rain protection is underfoot, not overhead.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 weeks ago

It's actually quite fascinating that some people think it's a good idea. It's so bad in so many ways it's kind of impressive.

[–] peadigger@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I am still on them because driving in the shade is very comfortable inho

[–] grue@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

They don't provide shade when they're embedded in the roadway!

What you want is just a solar panel canopy over the roadway, which is a different thing.

Sorry to ruin your day but solar frickin roadways is currently doing another funding round.

And for some unexplainable reason people are still giving them more money.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, a good punchline and morons will fall for it again and again I guess.

It's just such a stupid idea on the face of it. Let's get rid of the extremely durable and infinitely recyclable road surface and replace it with a fragile and unrecyclable chunk of plastic and electronics. Let's put a million tiny solar panels in these chunks of plastic that'll get demolished by cars instead of putting a few larger, cheaper solar panels at the side of the road

Scott Manley is often way too nice for some of the dumb ideas he looks at. To the point it's sometimes annoying where he wants to have a positive look on things that are obviously never going to work.

Yeah I respect Scott Manley but there's a reason I like Professor Dave and enjoy Thunderf00ts scam debunks. Scammers, con artists, pseudoscientiste, and charlatans need to be treated with far more derision and mokery.

Thunderf00ts scam debunks

Thunderf00t is pretty out of touch when it comes to spaceflight though. If I recall correctly, he kept touting "Falcon 9 reuse will never work", and then pivoted to "Starship will never work" once it became clear how successful Falcon 9 is.

I've been watching him since the old anti-SJW era (not proud of it but I'll own it) and when it comes to tech scams and whatnot he has a pretty damned good track record. Frankly the fact that he only has one or two things he has been wrong about on that front is pretty damned impressive, which given how long he has been doing this shit it's a pretty damned good track record.
