Doing my best not to contribute

[–] misk@piefed.social 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You also have to subscribe to Disney, NBC, Paramount and WBD if you really mean it.

It's advertisement revenue, not subscription, apparently

[–] misk@piefed.social 1 points 3 weeks ago

To meet that consumer demand, streaming services now offer ads in some of their subscription plans thankfully!

They get me on mobile (forced ad views on their app), but not on desktop (Firefox/uBlock).

If you have Android, look into ReVanced

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah I'll check it out. Thank you!

Why use an app and not the website?

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I just assumed the app was better to navigate than the website while on mobile. Maybe I should give it a shot, or one of the other suggestions here.

I am on iOS, if I watch YouTube it is via the web interface and my adblockers stop pretty much everything.

[–] Egonallanon@feddit.uk 4 points 3 weeks ago

If you're on android try the pipepipe app from the fdroid store. It blocks ads, has sonpsorblock built in and can play videos with the app closed.

Easiest way is use a VPN that says you're in Albania. I'd recommend Mullvad or proton as a second choice

Christ, they way they tell it, you'd think those like myself with adblockers were the death of the platofrm by forcing it into near insolvency.

Pffft!

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 23 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

And yet they want even more ad revenue. YouTube Ad breaks are supposedly going to get longer and have less options to skip.

And yet they want even more ad revenue.

There is no such thing in business as "enough". The plan universally is enshittify until customers revolt.

They need to pay Federal taxes at the full corporate rate with zero deductions. Americans deserve Public Healthcare, Google can afford to fun that. You're next Facebook.

[–] Marn@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 weeks ago

I agree they should pay in full, but let's not pretend they wouldn't just use that money for more war or something else unhelpful

[–] Tigeroovy@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 weeks ago

And I will continue blocking their ads.

And I hate it these days. I really do.

I understand why the better creators make their videos the way they do. I understand why there are channels that just churn out hundreds of low effort vids every day. I get it. At the same time, even the things that are considered quality content on YouTube just don't appeal to me anymore.

People send me links and I can hardly be bothered to watch them, let alone browse for hours.

Oh well.

[–] Linktank@lemmy.today 4 points 3 weeks ago

Who is actually buying stuff from youtube ads? Idiots, that's who. An idiot and their cash are easily separated.

[–] Schmookey@retrofed.com 2 points 3 weeks ago

I tend to watch it more these days for video podcasting content and live sports, the platform is actually really good for live sports. WSL, J-League and Bundesliga and whilst they don't show The 6 Nations Rugby (yet!) You can view the Rugby Europe matches there too. Plus more Public Service Broadcasters in the UK are putting their content on the platform. My only worry is the oncoming Boomer onslaught to the platform so they can watch their shows lol

And with no union representation whatsoever.

[–] WagnasT@piefed.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

I would hope the business models of the paid services get less ad revenue than the "free" service that is funded almost entirely by ads.
