Oh god, that's horrible!

[–] Crazyslinkz@lemmy.world 24 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Please NSFW or spoiler.. that's gnarly.

[–] TrojanRoomCoffeePot@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Ah, sorry. Is there coding to mark comments as NSFW, or do you mean applying the Spoiler coding to comments?

Testing, testing, 1, 2, 3...Much appreciated, I'll keep it in mind.

Just a way to prevent auto loading the image.

It is, and they're lucky it's only 1 damage too. NPC's don't have a very large HD pool after all.

Looks like it did 1d4 (and rolled a 1) points of dex

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Take 1d4 damage!

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Shite. Hope that's an AI image. That looks like Lego's evil cousin.

[–] TrojanRoomCoffeePot@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Can't say for certain, but I originally nabbed it about 7 years ago, and there's info about it being created by a 'Larry' in the file. Presumably Larry's either the caltrop victim or their friend who snapped the photo.

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 19 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Unfortunately we're still stuck with caltrops as the standard d4 shape when so many better options exist

[–] CubitOom 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

There are not too many choices if you are a fan of platonic solids

[–] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Platonic solids exclude the Rhombic Dodecahedron, so who needs them?

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

better options exist

Standardising on D6 only?

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

How would this work?

I mean you could use a d8 with duplicate 1-4 numbers.

[–] coalie@piefed.zip 11 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

The original d20s doubled as d10s. They came uninked and you were instructed to use two different colored markers to mark one set of 1-0 one color and then second set a different color.

Or a d12 with 1-4 three times, which is what I use for my d4s

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Rejig everything so it's so multiples of 6.

Warhammer moved from D3, D4, D6, D8, D10, D12 and D20 to just D6 (and D3 from D6) You need a lot of D6, but they're ubiquitous.

[–] Yosmonkol@piefed.social 2 points 3 weeks ago

Wouldn't that change the probabilty curve? I guess it could be nice if you wanted to limit critical success and failure but it might reduce the sense of randomness.

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

That's actually a tough choice, I like having a variety of shapes for my click clacks but I despise the caltrop d4

Edit: I've thought about it, and if I had to choose between a "standard" dice set with tetrahedron d4, or only a pool of d6s, I would choose the dice set and try to avoid ever using a d4.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

One fun fact about dice is you can have any higher faced die substitute for a lower faced one by rerolling any number not on the lower die.

This is why I only carry a d100

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

D4s are annoying. They're the only die without a top face, so it's hard to read the number, and since the faces slant inwards it can be hard to pick them up.

On the other hand, it's satisfying that the typical RPG dice contain the 5 platonic solids. If I had to play a game where a D4 was used often (unlike in say D&D where it's rare), I'd probably go with one of the alternate D4 shapes. Even if you prefer platonic solids, you can just use an 8-sided die and renumber 5-8 as being 1-4 again.

Do you need a microscope?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

i like the ones with a bottom face personally, but that might be because my first d4 was that way

[–] GraniteM@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I love the infinity d4

[–] Ziggurat@jlai.lu 6 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

I like that story, Looks like as fake as the story of the internet troll being a lazy GM throwing a troll at every stupid question from their player, but that's cool

[–] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 23 points 3 weeks ago

It's not "fake" so much as it is an obvious joke.

[–] papalonian@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Wait, you don't mean to tell me this is a fabrication, do you?

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 10 points 3 weeks ago

There is zero chance that someone would just go on the internet and lie.

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago

Nah dude, this is legit, I lived through the tail end of the satanic panic years, those FBI raids were no joke. We used to scatter a layer of d4s along the stairs leading the basement, right before the tripwire that releases a full paint can on a string. Every player was issued a smoke bomb before the start of the game so we could make a clean getaway while the officers were distracted.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

So is there a war between the number on top and the number on bottom d4?

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Picture I made for this thread a few months ago:

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 3 weeks ago

I actually have a bag of metal D4s specifically becsuse then they can be used as caltrops or those things Betty wore to give him super strength in Kung Pow.

[–] MeatPilot@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago

Or the real life prismatic spray if you throw them really hard at someone's face and eyes. If two of them land into the persons sight globes point first, it will cause blindness.
