Mainly because I wanted to look cool beside my colleagues, my Chromebook from high school wasn’t cool enough apparently.
Apple
A place for Apple news, rumors, and discussions.
A MacBook was just the next step. I’ve been in the ecosystem for a long time, since learning Basic on my parents’s Apple II in the late 70s.
Windows blows. Always has.
I used Windows OS my whole life. Used it for personal and for my job. It was such a change of pace to have a laptop that doesn’t overheat, make loud fan noises, doesn’t require a separate “fan-cooler” underneath the laptop, light-portable, and a battery that can last more than 4 hours. The integration to my other Apple devices is such a plus. I’m mainly speaking for the M2 MacBook Air. Plus I like the shiny Apple logo and the sleek design of the laptop.
I just needed portability and I tried a gamer laptop and it was cringe in terms of battery, power unplugged and airdrop is useful which it didn’t have. Plus the only games I do play wow and Minecraft are supported on m chips so like I’m good on that front 🐱
Battery life, silence, portability.
I bought a MacBook because this is the only machine that can have a long battery life while being silent and capable of more demanding tasks if needed.
I went with M1 Pro 14 because this has a better screen (deep blacks), great sound quality. And even if it gets old and no longer gets the new macOS, will still be capable of high quality image/sound while doing basic tasks.
The battery can always be replaced (at a cost, but still)
I enjoy gaming and even if I want to game, I can still use this laptop with cloud gaming (GeForceNOW, boosteroid, etc) long after the machine is considered “slow”. I have faith in the new silicon chips for its power efficiency. I hope I am not wrong.
Ecosystem Last years and still functioning well
I’ve been using Windows, Linux, and Android systems, and started to use ipad pro for my coursework (lecture notes and my research stuff). I love gadgets, and for like 30 years I couldn’t believe that I’ve not owned a single macbook. Of course, high price and the fact that, gaming laptop + linux seemed way better for the price.
Anyways, after completing my mandatory military service, I just decided to give it a try - ipad pro (2nd gen) was really good. So I decided to swap to Apple completely (except the watch) to check out Apple devices. I bought my first iPhone and got myself my first ever macbook - M1 max in December 2021 and I really love it. (Yeah, apple silicon was a real big jump in terms of performance!) (but I can’t say the same about iphones though - wasn’t that happy with it :/)
I just wish there was better gaming support though. Although not relevant to this sub, I do not know why macbooks are not supported for genshin impact. I really should complain to Mihoyo. Harder.
My current laptop is 2012/2013 retina MacBook Pro 15”. There was no alternative to this laptop back then - almost no laptops with IPS screens, and none with HiDPI like that at all. Battery life was better than competitors thanks to a 100 Wh cell. Could drive 3 external displays + internal. Awesome build quality and overall internal design.
Modern MBPs have similar appeal - with much higher performance than alternatives thanks to M2 architecture and incredible power efficiency. 120Hz mini-LED screens are class leading (I prefer them to AMOLED / OLED due to better color uniformity in general and no angle dependant color shift). External display support is absolutely insane with up to 3x 6K 60Hz + 1x 4K 144Hz on the M2 Max chip. Best trackpad in the world for decades which I prefer to mouse for everything except gaming.
Ecosystem integration is just a bonus at this point.
I had what existed of the Apple ecosystem back in 2014 (phone & iPad) because it’s what all my friends had - so I continued on (AirPods, Mac, MacBook Pro, air, keyboards, trackpads, etc.) once airdrop was introduced I was fully hooked. I could airdrop whole installation packages for my college job & it made install/upgrades much easier for our computer labs.
I have a dell xps somewhere in a closet & I don’t use it much. I thought I’d want to have dual OS just for side project purposes but haven’t found any real time to devote to it. Plus windows machines always seem to have a bunch of security/virus issues. Idk if that’s changed in the last decade or so, but I was always able to go on sketch websites from my Mac and it never bricked it…whereas windows ones felt like they were constantly bogged down with malware.
Because it was a status symbol. Dumb reason I know
The M1 MBA was simply the best laptop for my use case at that price, I needed a somewhat powerful, lightweight laptop with good battery life for college. I had always wanted to try MacOS too so that was a bonus
To flex
Macbook Air was the most affordable light flagship model when I bought it last year. Thinkpad X1 and Dell XPS were crazy expensive.
I’m from Thailand, learned to install Windows when I was 7. After that I moved to New Zealand and got exposed to Mac, I fell in love with it.
Apple ecosystem it was. But my experience hasn’t been good. The machine started freezing frequently a week into being bought. At the repair guys since the last 2 weeks and they presume the problem is hardware. They are checking it with a new logic board on. Should I be writing to Apple? Is it of any help?
First laptop I bought was an Asus. It just about lasted 4 years of uni. Second time I got a top of the range dell (at the time £1k). It started out great, I could use all the Adobe software. After 2years I had to replace the battery, keyboard, and fan, but it would often crash when using Adobe software. I gave up on it after 3 years. It still worked, but even after wiping it and reinstalling windows, it would crash when playing games or using Adobe software. I finally forked out £2.5k on a macbook pro 3 years ago (yes, before m1) and haven't looked back. While it is a little bit slower than when I first bought it, it can run all the Adobe software without crashing. The only downside is not many games run on mac, so I bought a steamdeck too.

Ecosystem. I had a iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and AirPods/beats. I didn’t really need a laptop, but I did need something to replace my old iPad and the M1 also got me pretty excited with how groundbreaking it was. That paired with the fact I got an amazing deal that meant I only had to pay about £750 a couple of months after it released, it was a right place right time kind of purchase.
In all honesty though, the ecosystem stuff doesn’t really contribute much to my use outside of being able to see my iMessage on my computer and controlling my HomeKit devices. I just had very low faith in a long lasting windows device actually existing at that point so thought I’d give MacBook a try, since so many People say they last a very long time before needing replacing. 99% of what I do on my MacBook can be done with an iPad, which is why I’m not buying a new iPad. If I do, my MacBook will be a paperweight.
Because I was sick of only getting 2-3 years of reliable performance out of my pc laptops. My late 2015 macbook pro is still going strong. No performance issues, still fast enough for what I use it for, plenty of power. Apple ecosystem is just a nice bonus
I bought a macbook air 15 inch to stay in the apple ecosystem. And as a uni student, its more than enough for my daily needs. I dont game on pc or anything and I love my macbook, giving it heavy use daily
Because I wanted to
apple ecosystem, the aesthetic of the laptop is clean and simple, and runs smoothly. I used to always have hp laptops that would get stupid slow 2 months in.

They were among the best in terms of both specs and build quality. I thought the display was particularly good. The touchbar intrigued me. And probably the biggest issue: I really wanted to get away from Windows and the apps I use regularly were available on Mac OS. I also had some experience with Macs from the lab I worked at and from grad school, so I knew I'd be able to reorient myself quickly though I was certain that the OS had undergone significant changes since I last used it in grad school (I was right!). When I had previously used a Mac, I really liked the ease of adding tags to files. It is a massive pain in the ass in Windows to add tags and really make use of them. Now that I'm back on Mac OS, I'm making rather extensive use of the file tagging and smart folders. It is insanely useful for me. Since I was largely motivated by a desire to get away from Windows, I'm sure someone may have the question about why I didn't switch to Linux. I'm familiar with Linux. It used to be my primary OS and I used to work on a supercomputer that used Linux. My needs have changed and Linux didn't have the software I wanted to use and the "equivalents" were very poor substitutes to the titles I wanted to uss. Primarily when it comes to graphics software (Serif Affinity). I've come to prefer the way Mac OS works over other systems and at this point plan for my next computer to also be a Mac.
Cause I don’t need windows 😂
I have mine for work. We used to be a Mac shop then they decided to transition over to PCs. For a long while it was because i was doing some iOS builds and needed a mac. When it came time to finally get a new laptop i said i still needed a mac cause i do design work. I don't really need one now, but the hardware is SOOO much nicer.
Main reason is to develop iOS apps
I wanted a laptop with a long battery life with good power efficiency. Many of the x86 based laptop can be faster than the macbook and may even have long battery life, but if you run a heavy workflow the cpu will either throttle to save power or run down the battery at a very accelerated rate. I am not particularly tied to any ecosystem.
The laptop also has a nice screen and keyboard, but so do many of the windows laptops.
On thing I do not like about the mac are the lack of expandability. The base models are often a good deal but the price shoots up if you customized it with more memory or storage, which you can't even expand later.
To be honest, I'm not much of an Apple fan. However, when it comes to MacBooks, they are excellent machines!
As a computer scientist, I enjoy my MacBook for Software Development and Engineering. The fact that macOS is a subset of Unix helps a lot. I come from Ubuntu (Linux) so transitioning to Mac was very easy.
It's great for my various projects. I bought my M1 Max 32gb 14" MBP almost 2 years ago and it has been great. Nothing to complain about. In 3 years, I'll probably buy another Mac unless if Blizzard decides they want to port World Of Warcraft to Linux.
Because I needed a new laptop and the M1 Macbook pro was as powerful as my Windows desktop while on battery and far cheaper than an equivalent windows laptop that was on par with my desktop, and the laptop would need to be plugged in.
I didn't, it was a gift
Battery life
I’d wanted one for ages and thought it would be super nice to be able to answer text messages on my computer. Plus MacBooks were smaller and lighter than my previous laptop
edit travel photos and videos. im not an influencer, i do that for my retirement.
Because i can 🤷♂️
First MacBook pro was 2007. iPhone just came out. Nearly got a blackberry curve but tried the iPhone instead. Windows vista had launched 6 months earlier and it was terrible. iPhone was really innovative so I gave their laptops a try. I was hooked. As phone, iPad, laptop interoperability got better and then HomePod and AppleTV made its way into my house, I invested into a single ecosystem.
I work as a professional photographer and have done for over 10 years and have always been in the Mac world, I just find that the adobe suite is just optimised better, during the pandemic I purchased a Razer gaming laptop and was using both at one point, but just was reminded how much I disliked windows.
Currently rocking a M2 Max mbp 16 with 32gb ram, and I haven't been able to make a fan kick in! and believe me, I tried!
Logic Pro is that good of a DAW
Get experience in other another OS. I’m already extremely good with windows and Linux, need to apple Mac OS to that list
Well, Apple ecosystem makes everything easier, also they last tons of time… never had issues with any of my Macs, they don’t have all the errors I can see in Windows and now you can do everything, so… for me is a no brainer
As someone who would be buying laptops in a MacBook’s price range even if I went windows (no $500 machines here), they seem like pretty perfect all around machines. I’m not a power user who needs or even wants my laptop to be extremely good at one thing at the expense of other aspects, and I just love lots of things about my MacBook - trackpad (mediocre trackpad is a huge dealbreaker for me), battery life, the screen quality. Build quality and customer service are also great
I also just prefer MacOS bc of iPhone compatibility but that’s more subjective
Ecosystem
eBay used for $300 to $500
eBay repairs for $100
I'm definitely somewhat of an outlier here. I don't hate PCs... they have their place in my workflow. Had the choice of picking Mac or Windows for work, went with Macbook for a change of pace.
I like it. A lot.
Still, I'm all over the place. Not a fan of the iPhone, but love my iPad. Don't think I'm ready to with Windows, but will probably go with mac mini.
I like variety in tech.
