Donald Trump said on Thursday he was not concerned about rising U.S. gas prices driven by the widening Iran conflict, telling Reuters in an exclusive interview that the U.S. military operation was his priority.

"I don't have any concern about it," he said, when asked about the higher prices at ‌the pump. "They'll drop very rapidly when this is over, and if they rise, they rise, but this is far more important than having gasoline prices go up a little bit."

The comments mark a shift in tone for the president, who touted a drop in gas prices in his State of the Union address last month and at a Texas rally focused on energy that took place just hours before the U.S. launched its air strikes on Saturday.

That shit was last week

Between that and calling the war an "operation," it's obvious Reuters is sanewashing Trump.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 month ago

Right? He was so proud of his (clearly fabricated) low gas prices.

And the average Trump voter will just accept that happily.

[–] LuxSpark@lemmy.cafe 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I figured they like higher gas prices. They will buy a bigger vehicle to use even more.

[–] joekar1990@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

The diesel bros are going to be so proud. Diesel jumped the most since last month up $0.50 as a national average and sits at $4.16/gal according to AAA.

[–] outofthisworld@lemmy.org 6 points 1 month ago

They will think the extra price will be used for war

with stickers of Boden: "I did this"

[–] markovs_gun@lemmy.world 39 points 1 month ago (6 children)

And suddenly all the people who voted for Trump "for the economy" are suddenly fine with it.

Why is it more important?

[–] I_Jedi@lemmy.today 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

More wealth extraction means more profits!

[–] xenomor@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Also Israel. Don’t forget Israel.

This is just more proof that he's going to do something to prevent the 2026 midterms from happening.

[–] Typotyper@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 month ago

He thinks having a war and civil unrest, in the U, Iranian counter attacks would be even better, will let him cancel elections

[–] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Reports are indicating this will last until at least Sept. so yeah. He’s gonna suspend voting.

If he does there better fucking be some pitchforks.

So he's declared that he doesn't give a fuck what consequences this war has for the American people. He doesn't care if Americans die. Remind me why he hasn't been charged with treason

[–] Man_kind@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The only reason trump doesnt care about what happens to you, is because he believes you won't do anything about it.

So far, he's right.

It is a curious thing to see how much punishment and humiliation Americans will take from this asshole. The third Reich really is an apt comparison.

I mean I'm loathe to talk up old Adolf here, but he did things that benefited his people (at first) and he was quite loyal and dependable to his band of thugs (up to the night of the long knives, that is).

Trump only pleases his class and foreign autocrats whilst replacing his trusted followers on a whim every now and then. It's simply baffling that no one has thrown him under the bus.

Yeah, Hitler understood that you needed the bread as well as the circuses.

That said, the degree to which he improved material conditions in Germany is overplayed in popular media. While the Nazis did push programs like the VW Beetle and cheap holiday packages, their relentless push to rearmament came at a serious cost to Germany's ability to produce or import consumer goods, and the average German frequently struggled with empty shelves in the supermarkets.

While the Nazis did push programs like the VW Beetle

Another point of order about that in particular, zero regular citizens who paid into the Beetle scheme with their little KdF-Wagen Sparkarte stamps actually received one. All of the Beetles produced went to Nazi party leaders, and then Germany went to war. Hitler may have successfully sold people on the dream of an affordable personal car but he literally used it as a mechanism to embezzle money from his own citizens which he stole and used for war production.

5 Mark die Woche musst du sparen wills Du im eignen wagen fahren, my webbed foot.

"Listen, I only say I care about shit to get you to vote for me. I couldn't possibly care less what you have to pay. I'm the only thing that matters."

[–] timbuck2themoon@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 month ago

I think it is a big shift honestly. Before he would pretend to give a shit, etc.

Between this and "yeah, some people will die" he's not even making an effort anymore.

To me that is saying something. Precisely what I'm not sure but it's a marked change.

[–] justalittleguy@lemdro.id 13 points 1 month ago

Strange, that wasn't the attitude during Biden's years. Almost like this fuckwad is a massive hypocrite

I should have taken pictures of the Turd's yard signs from Fall 2024.

There were several different variations of the same theme: Trump [good thing], Kamala [opposite, bad thing].

One of them was: Trump low prices, Kamala high prices.

Republicans have lied the entire time Trump has been in office about how prices were suddenly much lower because eggs and eggs alone were cheaper, which had gotten super expensive for a time due to culling of the chickens to mitigate bird flu and something that the president doesn't control. Disregarding that the overall grocery bill continued to climb largely due directly to the Trump administration policies.

Now it's the same with gas. Shit got expensive under Biden, largely due to COVID related issues on a global scale. Prices came down and stabilized a bit, a trend which continued under Trump's presidency. And then boom -- start a war in the middle east. Now prices are up. But instead of blaming Trump, they're pointing the finger at Biden. Because they lie. They don't care about the reasons these things happen.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 9 points 1 month ago

It's up 75 cents in my area, just over the last week. I was originally saying we'll see $4 before the end of March, but I think we'll see it before the end of next week. We'll have $5 gas this summer.

Thanks, Trump.
