The Finnish company Jolla is back with the Linux-powered Jolla Phone. Itโ€™s being positioned as an antidote to the US-dominated smartphone status quo of Android and iOS.

Honestly wish somebody would go for a nokia style form factor. with signal protocol integration, rcs, usb c and beefy battery, maybe 5g?!, performant processor, custom os/NOT ANDROID its so ugly on smaller screen sizes also not performant, also some really fun apps like: email, rss reader, web radio, tetris, also a compass, and a keychain hole, and a 100โ‚ฌ price tag.

Is that irony?

Will it run my bank apps? That's all I care about, really.

[โ€“] ciferecaNinjo@fedia.io 5 points 4 weeks ago

I hope it wonโ€™t run bank apps. When my bank tries to shut down their website and force me onto a smartphone (which is inherently not a smart move for privacy and security), I want to be able to show them that their app wonโ€™t run on my linux phone so there is pressure to keep the website running.

Fuck phone banking. Letโ€™s have some separation of church and state.

boot lickers who want to run corporate spyware โ†’ Android or iOS
freedom seekers who want to keep their dignity and autonomy โ†’ linux

Worth noting that banks deliberately block alternative platforms. Some detect whether they are running in an emulator and refuse to run. And โ€œemulatorโ€ is very loose. I saw a bank app refuse to run on a laptop that natively ran Android.
