What made you choose your Fediverse Instance?

Why did you choose your Fediverse Instance, does it have a bigger meaning than it was a bigger instance or was it for a certain reason? Did you have to be on your instance you chose?

It would be weird to host an instance without using it...

I didn't give a shit

My account on the old nsfw stopped working because apparently someone shit the bed or stopped doing something or whatever

It's not something that I care about, so I just did whatever

I have no idea what instance I'm on

I don't even know what instances are, or what difference it makes

[–] bonenode@piefed.social 13 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

You know, I actually love reading this. People complain a lot about how complicated the fediverse/lemmy/whatever is and they cannot even sign up, yada yada. And yet here you are, not giving a damn about it all and still you manages to make an account and you are here. Kudos to you!

[–] Skavau@piefed.social 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You are on lemmy.world

You can see the instance others are on by the @ after their name. If they don't have one, they are local to you.

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 3 points 1 month ago (4 children)

I think that it depends on how you access lemmy. Iirc, voyager and some others allow you to toggle user instances (at least for comments)

maintainer is from my country, rules are good and reasonable, nice local content, no local drama

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 month ago

I made accounts on a few instances, but I stuck with this one (and eventually joined the team) for the same reasons

Very small blocked list and doesn't block NSFW. Users should make their own choices. Also awesome stats every month.

This is probably the first sharkey post I see on lemmy. It looks really good, nice.

[–] adhd_traco@piefed.social 11 points 1 month ago

I heard people I respect talk about it in ways I enjoyed :)

The public feed, rules, etc. also looked like a good match for me. And I'm absolutely grateful to be able to post from here!

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago (4 children)

After reaching out and proving I was human, the admins agreed to activate my account manually so I didn't have to enter a valid email address.

[–] fedicate@break3.social 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's such a out of the way thing the admins done for you. It seems like sh.itjust.works is a fairly decent place for Lemmy users to go from what I've seen so far.

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Well, it was simple, as my previous user, neidu2, had a long history of posts/comments, most of which I believe aren't that trashy. Or maybe the perfect level of trashy for SJW, idk.

I needed to make a new account when lemm.ee shut down and feddit.uk was the first one that came to mind. I'm not even from the UK.

I migrated during Reddit's API debacle. I picked sh.itjust.works for several reasons:

  • No email required to sign up (at the time)
  • Hosted the only NonCredibleDefense community on Lemmy (at the time)
  • Had almost no defederated instances (at the time)
  • Consistent uptime (was 99% at the time and still not far off)
  • Hosted in Canada but accepting of US citizens
  • Powered by 98% renewable energy
  • TheDude abides

While some things have changed like defederating from more servers, it's left up to a vote by users of the server and the vote doesn't get proposed unless there's a good reason (such as a server being Nazi-friendly or constantly harassing/trolling users)

I've been an SDF member for about 25 years. They created a Lemmy server, I tried it out, and here I am.

Dring the Reddit Migration, this was the first one I heard about, so I picked it. Haven't been bothered to change it since.

When I was on Reddit, /r/CasualUK/ was my spiritual home, so moving to Feddit UK, home of !casualuk@feddit.uk, was a no brainer.

[–] TheWeirdestCunt@lemmy.today 6 points 1 month ago

I was on lemmy.ee and when it shut down I wanted to join an instance that wouldn't defederate unless it absolutely had to, .today was the first option I saw and it works well enough for what I need it for

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Its a decently sized Piefed Server that allows me to talk about Politics.

I used to use Piefed dot World and before that Lemmy Word but they explicitly and openly support the misogynist, transphobic, pro-war, pro-genocide tankie Lemmy Developers, so I don't go there anymore.

EDIT: The hecks this little fedicate bubble?

[–] cloudskater@piefed.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Wait, are you talking about .ml? I wasn't aware of .world being really bad.

I was looking over instances sorted by uptime, saw one that had high uptime, a lot of users, and a literal promise that shit will just work in its name. I did a bit of scoping to see that it was easy to view communities across all instances from SJW and figured, fuck it, seems like as good a choice as any.

[–] ContactClosure@lemmus.org 5 points 1 month ago

I didn't know about instances, it was the first one that popped up. 🤦

[–] disregardable@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I saw a post recommending lemmy.zip for beginners, and, while it doesn't cater to my interests at all, it is a casual, well run, and nicely designed instance. I didn't understand what an instance was, but now I like the design of blorp.lemmy.zip

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 1 month ago

The other furry instance shut down. 😞

[–] MissJinx@lemmy.world 4 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

when I started here there were not many people and only some instances were big enough to interact. Have you been to .ml? only crazy ppl. So I came to world and prayed for the best

[–] smh@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Slrpnk was down for a few days and the admin was super transparent about what was going on (iirc, they were on a business trip and something happened to their home server that needed a physical button press). I was happy with that level of communication, and occasional down time is good for getting out and touching grass.

edit: I was on sdf before, but they're a lot less transparent about maintenance issues.

Because I already started using Mastodon.World years ago, then Lemmy.World, and now Piefed.World. 🤷‍♂️

[–] Endmaker@ani.social 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (6 children)

I started with lemmy.world, the biggest generalist instance, for an easy starting point. I thought I would be interacting in programming and anime threads.

In the end, I end up discussing mostly weeb stuff, so ani.social looks more appropriate.

Also, I don't know the specifics, but if ani.social triggered lemmy.ml enough for lemmy.ml to defederate from ani.social, it must be doing something right.

In my experience, the instance and community moderators of ani.social are based. I barely see any drama unlike some other instances. I'd say I chose well.

I hear piefed is the new better thing so why not try it out?

[–] Atomic@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

I picked one at random. Then I quickly realised .ml is nuts so I picked a different random one. How do I feel about about my instance? No strong feelings one way or the other. It's ok I guess

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

It was the first one I saw that didn't have a "silly" name.

[–] exaybachae@startrek.website 3 points 1 month ago

I got into a fight in a bar, and some guy showed up, intervened, then hung out and kinda insisted I follow in my father's footsteps. I was like, meh, but I had nothing better to do, so I signed up.

[–] Lor@mander.xyz 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

i chose mander.xyz because they do not de-federate or block any instances (other than threads) - I would like the opportunity to do my own censoring. That said, it is a great instance with good up time and hosted communities. Science FTW. A++

I figured SDF were the sort of people who would consider uptime a badge of honour.

I should probably be on Hexbear but I didn't know of its existence at the time. Very problematic, my Xibuck direct deposits keep bouncing.

[–] gigachad@piefed.social 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I wanted to check out PieFed because the Lemmy devs suck

[–] leavenotrace@feddit.nu 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I chose it because it's the biggest Swedish instance, even if there are only ~100 active users.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

.world was the biggest one. I have since switched to one that doesnt have abusive zionist mods in news and worldnews (looking at you, jordanlund), but I still come back to .world periodically when I dont see much new content on the instance I like. Mods moderating to support their own biases can ruin a site.

[–] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 month ago

Disgust over .world an piefed's neoliberal crusade.
