Pretty much exactly this. You stick useless people in these important roles so they can't get enough traction to try for your chair, but you also want people who are at least smart enough to do whatever you tell them to do. Patel is actually a smart pick, he's just too dumb to know how to push around actual field agents and only knows how to push around analysts and media.

No offense to the Guthrie family but it was pretty clear that local LE and the FBI don't give a shit when it was weeks later that they asked people to send outdoor camera vids and even more clear when the local delivery driver was their only suspect after that.

sports is pretty much as political as Politics, so theres a "that side and your side" and conservatives love these types of tribalism.

Everyone with experience in these cases agrees the woman is dead, it was a home invasion gone wrong. I think the authorities know this. I assume the ransom and ensuing press coverage is just a huge distraction from other things going on, because it makes LE look good. They certainly don't give a shit when a brown person goes missing, but a famous white lady's mom, yeah that's gripping news POTUS needs to be involved with
