Best movie, or best WW2 movie? Which is a better representation of the war? The experiences of the soldiers? Which has better art direction and writing and acting? Which one is a better reflection of the current zeitgeist?

I don't have answers, I just feel like "better" has a lot of dimensions.

The Thin Red Line is an amazing film.

The best (as in, most realistic) world war 2 movie is Come And See.
It shows the war from the side that most suffered from it, the Russian population.
80% of the war happened inside Russia.

Haven't seen this but have heard this title for decades. One day, I'll have the strength to take this film on.

I think that When The Trumpets Fade is a better WW2 movie.

  • The Pianist

  • Empire of the Sun

  • The End of the Affair

  • 火垂るの墓 — "The Grave of the Fireflies"

  • La Vita e Bella — "Life is Beautiful"

Less about how the front lines and the warriors fared. More about how the wars affected individuals, particularly children.

"The Day the Clown Cried" was released from the library of Congress last year but I haven't seen a copy so I don't know where it rates.

I like both, but as I've gotten older the philosophical approach of Malick's film has begun to really resonate.
