Welcome to the discussion of US Politics!

Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
  3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

The Cold War? Child's play compared to what lies ahead, according to U.S. historian Robert Kagan. Trump, he says, is leading the world into the most dangerous era since 1945.

Putin won the Cold War. Things that are happening I would never though would happen and I really believed republicans would defend the constitution, they talked about it so much.

Now even talking against them is dangerous since they are tracking everyone. I really though people would protect more democracy

Ok, honest question. That Wikipedia article doesn't seem to say anything about him being a piece of shit, what do you mean?

[–] RomeCallen@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

He is a neo conservative, which I dunno if it qualifies him to be a POS but it does make everything he says pretty fucking suspect.

Sure, the never trumpers are better than not but they still helped usher in this current day madness

I suspect most people feel that if things get too bad (too late) things will be taken care of for them, someone else will do it, etc. Despite all the rhetoric there is still a lot of faith in the system, at least from the older folks. I have to say it is quite eerie and weird though and not in a good way.

Time to study and read socialist theory. Seriously! https://redsails.org/

I totally don't understand the "no resistance" part. Is then this country filled with total idiots? Or are they all that greedy, they think they are going to get something from that orange satan if they support him? Both possibilities are despiccable.

[–] yabbadabaddon@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 month ago

From an outside perspective, I have a feeling that there is a lot of resistance. It's just that politicians mostly aren't doing shit. Same thing for most media. And I think that yes, they are all mostly greedy.

That's the culture in the US, money has always been able to influence and coordinate over ideology. It has become clear that patriotism in the US is so obsessed with the romanticized past to make up any actual ideological conviction in the present. Otherwise, we would see a lot of states begin trying to coordinate with each other against a clearly unconstitutional federal government.

I thought, giving a gun to everything that breaths was supposed to prevent this?

[–] Rooskie91@discuss.online 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

No resistance! That's why ICE shot those people!

This guy clearly didn't do any research on the street.

[–] 3jane@piefed.ca 3 points 1 month ago

He doesn't mean absolutely zero.

But things are far more dire than people think.

And huge rallies where people go home at the end of the day so nothing against someone like Trump. They need to stay out there instead of going back to work. The economy has to be brought to a standstill. It will take a huge toll. But to get rid of incipient despotism that's what it takes.

My friend Bob, who lives down the street, said the same thing (and he's no historian).

The US hasnt had a meaningful election in a long time. We were basically already a dictatorship. Now at least we can stop pretending that voting harder will change anything.

Americans don't care nearly enough as long as they still get their benefits from imperial plunder.

[–] favoredponcho@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It’s this actually. Nothing Trump has done has personally impacted most Americans, so they aren’t going to riot in the streets yet. By the time he does, they will have deployed the army and America will get to have its own Tiananmen square.
