It's sad but I'm betting monkeys do what they do for whatever nature reasons they do it.

[–] farek@lemmy.world 24 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

I just saw a video with this monkey being harassed by other monkeys and then running to hug his toy, it was really sad

[–] dustyvagina@lemmy.zip 8 points 12 hours ago

The monkey has since been adopted by a mother in the enclosure. I was super bummed when I seen that video so I had to look into it a bit. ☺

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 7 points 18 hours ago

Yeah, I did too :(((

I don't have the link right now, but I saw yesterday (with picture confirmation) that an adult had finally groomed and hugged this little guy.

Edit: Here's some video of him getting groomed. https://www.newsflare.com/video/839672/baby-monkey-punch-being-groomed-by-elder-monkeys

Best news ever 🥹

And here is a pic:

I'm going to turn my phone off and count the day as a success after seeing this. Thank you

[–] AquaTofana@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

I luckily saw this photo before I saw the original video somehow. It was still hella fuckin' sad and made my heart break, but if I had seen the original first I would have been bawling.

Instead I was like "Don't worry Punch! Your adoptive family is otw Little Guy!"

Why can't people see my relationship with my AI girlfriend as cute? I think it's cute.

[–] Glytch@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

This isn't cute. It's tragic. The same applies to your "girlfriend".

what does this comment mean? is this a one piece reference or something?

[–] medusa@sh.itjust.works 3 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Colbert had fun making this joke. I'm sure there have been others.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 3 points 13 hours ago

That's the joke.

IDK this is less aww and more depressing IMO... This world can be a cruel and vile place... The poor thing looks miserable.

[–] jenings@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago

A veil of tears if you will

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 41 points 1 day ago

That poor baby 😭 I can’t imagine the restraint it must take not to constantly snuggle the lil guy. Rooting for him though 🩵

Unfortunately lots of animals just decide their kid sucks and ditch it.

Modern culture has completely ruined the lightheaded nature of that sentence for me...

[–] erlend_sh@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

That was the update I needed today, thank you kind Internet stranger.

[–] laranis@lemmy.zip 2 points 22 hours ago

Fucking relatable.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 22 hours ago

So cute! Poor baby.

[–] ch00f@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This could do with a content warning. It’s a distressing read. Extremely so at times.

Zoos are gross and inhumane. This is type of behavior happens when animals are kept in captivity and it's really gross to portray the zoo as the "nice" party for giving a 10€ plush as a replacement mom.

[–] BanMe@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

I am no fan of zoos, but this behavior happens in the wild as well, when the mother is stressed, inexperienced, and/or lacks social support. Nature can be really fucking cruel and inhumane. Many and more animal babies die of starvation before they can get through their first few days... some species it's actually more common than successful parentage.

It's much more likely to occur in zoos.

If only we lived in a perfect world...

[–] Rekorse@sh.itjust.works 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I guess giving up our zoos would destroy us.

[–] jaennaet@sopuli.xyz 1 points 11 hours ago

If only we lived in a perfect world we could stop torturing animals

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

No this kind of behavior happens in nature as well. First time mothers often reject their baby and then the baby just dies.

It happens yes, but it's more common in zoos.
