If you like

Ricky Gervais

you can fuck off

[–] Prior_Industry@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

James Acaster tore him a new one, which was enjoyable.

Whenever Gervais fails at a joke, he just complains about people being too sensitive and how you can't even tell a joke anymore.

This picture practically sums up his joke style.

[–] manualoverride@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Why? He has always sounded like a really genuinely nice and thoughtful person.

[–] hypnicjerk@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

this ad is just islamophobic lol

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

His older work stands up mostly, but lately he has thrown in with the wave of "anti-woke" comedians, repeatedly doubling down when criticised for making transphobic remarks.

A comedian these days has a very difficult choice to make, it must be said. I fully admit it! They have to do a lot of emotional and mental labour to make light of the very dark times we live in, or they can just side with far-right billionaires and culture war reactionaries and just make easy punch-down jokes about people who already face incredible violence. It's got to be so hard!

[–] manualoverride@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I’ve had a look at this and if you replace trans with any other protected group the jokes are objectively satire and clearly meant to be comedy and not transphobic. There is no part of me who is in any way anti-trans, I couldn’t care less what gender you are now or used to be. In this case I think some people just don’t want to be the subject of jokes no matter how innocent the intentions.

I really don't care to litigate anyone's comedy, it's the reaction that damned him. The simple truth is that if someone doesn't like your joke, they're right.

Nobody has ever seriously defended or explained a joke so well that it eventually became funny, and every professional comedian knows it. You either spin it into a different bit or apologise and move on. You've got to be a real prick to be that rich, privileged, safe, and still think you have to defend a joke that hurt someone's feelings. "Sorry that one sucked, no hate." How hard is that?

If a veteran comedian like him chooses to get serious and defend a joke, that tells me they weren't joking or they have a different motive than mere entertainment. Trust is built slowly, quickly lost. Especially among persecuted groups.

[–] manualoverride@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

They’re not saying that his jokes were not funny, they were saying that he is transphobic. He disagrees, end of story.

[–] Viceversa@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The simple truth is that if someone doesn't like your joke, they're right.

There's always someone, who doesn't like the joke. Always.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Exactly, that's... That's exactly how subjectivity works. Is there a problem?

[–] Viceversa@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes. That doesn't make every joke wrong.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk -1 points 1 day ago

Oh, dear. There's been a huge misunderstanding. You're thinking of objectivity. Jokes are not objects, they're sub-

Look, I can't do everything. Dear reader, please look into this and report back with your findings.

[–] Tikiporch@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

He holds some disagreeable opinions and has probably done at least several things wrong.

[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That describes the majority of people, and really depends on who's defining what's an agreeable opinion.

[–] Tikiporch@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago
[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I like him and I'm going nowhere.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 2 points 2 days ago

Yeah you are, you're fucking off!

[–] webp@mander.xyz 21 points 2 days ago

I don't like someone's untrained dog ambushing me

[–] osanna@thebrainbin.org 14 points 2 days ago

I like that people like dogs - they deserve a good home and loving owner - but they make me nervous. I was almost attacked by a dog on the street as a kid, and my dad had to take the bite instead to save me. 2 other kids in my family have been bitten by dogs as well, both times by dogs they had spent a significant amount of time with, but that suddenly got triggered by something out of the blue and attacked. I just can't trust that they'll always be friendly, and even one second of aggression is enough to cause some real damage.

[–] NABDad@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

We have a standard poodle. He's being trained as a service dog, but he's not there yet.

He's getting better, but when he first arrived, he would bark like a maniac anytime someone new entered the house.

We had a painter come in to do some work in our bathroom. He got upset when he heard Leo start barking because he had a traumatic experience with a dog.

Then he saw Leo was a poodle and he was suddenly ok.

I know Leo is all talk, but he's still a dog. Under all that fluff, he's basically a Doberman Pinscher.

[–] jojowakaki@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I have a dog, and I generally agree with the notion.

But, this is about Muslims isn't it,? I wouldn't be surprised if there is another one about bacon. This ad is pandering to the populace in the UK who is tending towards racism and xenophobia, most against but not limited to muslims. From market research standpoint, the same populace is probably also big on alcohol consumption so from perspective of market recognition and penetration, this is quite clever.

I'll let you decide for yourself what gervais might be saying with this ad campaign:

It's not that all Muslim's hate dog (1. dislike is not the same as hate, and 2. of course you can't generalize all muslims dislike dogs). But stricter practitioners of Islam don't keep dogs for the similar reason they don't consume pork. Something about dirty animals (haram).

Don't take my word for it [1] [2] [3]

To quote directly from some scriptures (copy pasted from the third link) :

That the Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever acquires a dog - with the exception of a dog to guard livestock, a hunting dog, or a farm dog - each day a Qirat is deducted from his reward. [Abu Dawood]

I heard Allah's Apostle(P.B.U.H) saying; "Angels (of Mercy) do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or a picture of a living creature (a human being or an animal)." [Hadith - Bukhari 3:515]

I doubt however many Muslims know why they shouldn't have dogs as pets as usually they are just told by their parents or elders that they shouldn't. It's the same thing in all religions.

[–] Viceversa@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Wow. Another reason for me to dislike Islam.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

I like dogs, I just don't like owning dogs. I don't want to have to be personally involved every time my pet needs to use the bathroom. And dog doors aren't an option because our cats aren't allowed outside, and are smarter than our dogs.

[–] mastertigurius@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

And you are the right type of non dog owner. You understand the responsibility in owning a dog and say "nope, haven't got time for that". I know plenty of dog owners that really should have said the same thing.

[–] RamSwamson@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I like cats, I just don't like owning cats. I don't want to have to be personally involved in scooping shit out of a box, that I keep inside of my house, that stinks up the place to the point that I forget about it till I have guests over that can very clearly smell it. And cat doors aren't an option because they would either runaway or terrorize the local ecosystem or both, and are not always open to love or affection like our dogs.

[–] Viceversa@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

You think this is some sort of gotcha in a competition?

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 2 points 1 day ago

You don't have to scoop! Automatic litter boxes are awesome.

[–] MyDogLovesMe@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago
