There are times my kids want to talk about Roblox/YouTube stuff that I'm not interested or I dislike. But I listen, because I'm a parent and I want my rugrats to share their interests with me.

But yeah, I get where this comic is coming from.

[–] Quetzalcutlass@lemmy.world 35 points 3 days ago

The author agrees with you.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 28 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I waaaas going to make a joke here, but you said roblox.

So now I gotta be serious.

You need to take roblox away from your kids. It is a danger to them. Pedophiles play that game specifically because it's easy for 43 year old men to talk to 7 year olds.

And the reason it's so easy is because the CEO of the company that makes roblox has stated in the past they will NOT take actions to stop the very real pedophile problem on their servers. Essentially roblox is pro-pedo.

You need to take roblox away from your kids.

[–] Th3D3k0y@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Or... And I get your point, but you could talk to your kids instead of like the comic was about, ignore them? I know what my kids play, I play with them on occasion. I also let them know that this sort of behavior is possible and to tell me if anything seems more suspicious than a bad trade on "Adopt Me" or scammers on "Steal a Brain Rot".

You're right though, abuse and manipulation are entirely possible and likely on Roblox because of a scummy CEO and I'd much rather them do something else, but I'm not going to dictate how my kids decide to have fun.

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

And even more to the point, they've locked chat. But yeah, I play traine eater and dumb obbies with my kids, and it's whatever. Some games are mindless. Some games are just shitty platformers. Some games have them doing math. There's a real variety. They also get exposed to scammy nonsense, and I'm okay with them building up: A, their tolerance for bullshit, and B, their ability to sense out scams.

It always comes down to are you parenting or not.

[–] galmuth@feddit.uk 6 points 3 days ago

We disabled chat and friend requests, and we only let our kid play it in the same room as us.

[–] blazeknave@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (2 children)

And here I was about to let my kid no longer be the only one of his friends not playing. So my theory that the Internet is dangerous and filled with predators to children still holds up, eh?

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Always has been. I remember in the 90s being a 13 year old boy, talking on a chat service thats long dead now. It was called "talkcity".

They were a collection of chatrooms. They had a chatroom for every niche. I hungout in the "teenchat".

I can remember having people message me, claiming to be 14/F/Cali. I was 13/M/Ohio.

So I didn't think anything of it at the time. But those chats were EXTREMELY sexual. Knowing what I know now, I was probably talking to a 40 year old dude living in his moms basement.

Even though talkcity is long dead, that behavior of targeted predators is very much still alive.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 1 points 2 days ago

That was basically my experience with AIM chat rooms.

[–] justsquigglez@leminal.space 5 points 3 days ago

Brother it ain't no theory, it's an unfortunate fact.

[–] assembly@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I’ve suffered through playing Italian BrainRot games with my kids. That is a level of commitment I never knew I had in me.

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

I am very grateful that my kids still fall in my sphere of influence. I'm pleased to say that their favorite games are: Super Hexagon, Super Meat Boy, Ori and the Blind Forest, Super Mario 3D Land, etc. No mention of Roblox, Minecraft or Fortnite in this house.

[–] StellarSt0rm@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Aw, don't dump Minecraft with those trash games (roblox and fortnite), modded Minecraft (And vanilla) is amazing, i personally like the Create mod and its addons, they allow to do very advanced things like storage systems and factories (Not that you cant do that in vanilla Minecraft, but it is more compact and sometimes complex too), i recently found the Create: Power Grid addon which adds realistic electricity to the game as an addon for Create, every electrical block has a rated Voltage (And more) that if you go above of by too much it will break and/or explode.

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Sorry I've never played Minecraft myself, bit my kid sometimes puts on YouTube videos of kids just being dumb in Minecraft. That's skewed my view. The kids might enjoy Minecraft's building elements, but they're still a bit young to grasp open ended play and need direction. I'll check it out.

[–] Zink@programming.dev 2 points 2 days ago

Vanilla Minecraft in creative mode is kind of like a big Lego set.

My son has built entire amusement parks and schools and stuff. I have helped him with some of it co-op, but probably 3/4 of it he made on his own then showed me.

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago

The comic panel has "buy our stuff" there, so i assume it's gonna be about the merch the youtuber about to push

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 24 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Even without YouTube, mother hated hearing me talk about Digimon and stuff. It was depressing. I had to listen to her ramble about her stupid colleagues, she could have at least pretended to listen to me ramble about Angewomon.

[–] yelling_at_cloud@programming.dev 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

God, I feel that!

My mother was scared that anything I liked might be harmful, so getting her to let me enjoy my games and music in peace felt like a win. She wouldn't feign any sort of interest, so if she asked a question you knew it was a threat.

In fact, I was almost 30 the first time either of my parents asked a genuine question about my favourite game of all time (that I spent literally thousands of hours playing). I was almost too shocked to answer.

I mean, I get that kid's stuff is boring, but I feel like if you can't take some kind of interest in your kids you shouldn't have any.

Rant over. Sorry, I just wanted to say that you're not alone!

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The first time my mother was genuinely interested in a hobby of mine was when I started gardening last year. It was the first time I heard pride in her voice that wasn't tied to education?

I'm very emotional now.

[–] yelling_at_cloud@programming.dev 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Did we have the same mom? I wish I could give you a hug, sis!

Gardening is awesome, by the way! What are you most looking forward to planting / doing in your garden this season?

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I mean, you could be my identical twin, but I know they don't have a lemmy account (yet) lol.

I'm going to plant some tomatoes, pink fang, assuming they survive the process! I'm also going to try some strawberries but the squirrels will probably eat them all lol

[–] Biscuit@ani.social 11 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Tell me more about this Angewomon.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It wasn't really about the Angewomon (though pretty angel is cool) it was just being listened to and involved in a conversation that didn't feel like it would turn condescending and mean randomly because I missed some vital thing :<

[–] Biscuit@ani.social 2 points 2 days ago

Nah my friend, I just wanted to listen :)

[–] Magnum 4 points 3 days ago

Is it an angry woman?

[–] Zozano@aussie.zone 2 points 3 days ago

And renamon.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago (1 children)

father backing child into a corner

"It's time for a six hour road trip listening to my favorite podcasts, son. And after that, I'm making you watch classic movies. And then we're going to play catch in the yard. After that I bought a model kit we're going to put together. And then we're going fishing!"

child-like screaming

[–] Dagnet@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's just the plot of the Goofy and Max movie

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

The Goof Who Sat by the Door

[–] doingthestuff@lemy.lol 4 points 3 days ago

I am a dad. I want to talk about YouTube videos.

His name was Robert Paulson.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Does he have bitch tits?

Ain't no doubt about it. He was doubly-blessed.

You think that's crazy....wait till I tell you that the theme song for the Disney show "Spidey and his amazing Spider Friends" was written and performed by Patrick Stump of Fallout Boy fame.

[–] BartyDeCanter@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 3 days ago

I feel this deep in my soul. My kids don’t have tablets or phones and are only allowed to watch things with us there that we approve of. And yet, somehow, my youngest wants to talk about fucking Mikey and JJ videos.

[–] turdas@suppo.fi 7 points 3 days ago
[–] agentTeiko@piefed.social 3 points 3 days ago (2 children)

At least they have moved on from Minecraft. If nothing else it's a good exercise in teaching them critical thinking by pointing out all the grifts and scams that come across their feed and teaching how to use YouTube without using the Algorithm parts.

[–] Zink@programming.dev 1 points 2 days ago

Yeah that is a very good point, unfortunately. With the way the future of the internet is shaping up, identifying the grift/scam will be a necessary every day skill.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 4 points 3 days ago

Implying the videos aren't Minecraft or Roblox related.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

No need to talk to me about YouTube or TikTok if I don’t even let my kid use them in the first place.
