It didn't sound like being a ghost was fun, and aftwr fulfilling their oath they got to move on to the afterlife. So i mean... Maybe the men of Dunharrow were just... Dumb?

They shouldn't have fucked around the first time.

On the one hand, they shouldn't be beholden to some "royal" douche somewhere simply because he's the king. "divine right" my ass.

On the other hand, don't make a promise ~~8d~~ if you can't or won't keep it.

On the third mutated hand, how much of them swearing an oath was due to societal brainwashing making them feel like they had to?

Aragorn can be a "good king" all he wants but as far as I'm concerned he's still just as bad as any other. He started his reign by banishing the person responsible for saving Faramir and thus securing his own ascendancy to the throne. Without a steward to hand over the proverbial keys, all we have is a sword some elves who raised this guy says is made of bits of some important historical sword, and an old dude with a walking stick who used to wear Grey but now decided white is more his style.

I mean, if I went around saying I was an emperor just because some crotchety hermit had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!

I thought we were an autonomous collective!

Beregond, of the citadel guard, prevented Faramir from being killed by Denethor by keeping other guards from entering and fulfilling Denethor's crazed wish of death with the only mostly-dead Faramir.

From the LOTR Fandom page: "After the War of the Ring, Beregond was brought before the newly crowned King Elessar to answer for the abandonment of his post, as well as the murders of those who stood in his way as he raced to rescue Faramir. Recognizing that what he did was out of love for his lord, he did not impose the death penalty upon him; the newly-crowned king's largesse allowed for Beregond to simply be banished from Minas Tirith"

Page 969 in my copy of the book.

That's crazy, I don't remember that at all. It's been a long time since I've read the books.

I don't remember the details of their particular agreement, but traditionally a vassal and a liege swore mutual protection - the vassal would provide men, and the liege would use those men to protect the lands. This oath was sworn on their honor. Honor was such a huge part of feudal society that the last duel in the USA was fought in 1859. Breaking that oath in this case literally meant that they forfeited their souls.

My brother in Eru, A-rod is the reason why we aren't a part of an Orc Taco Bar right now! And the first thing the dude did when he was crowned was walk over to the elf deligation, make out with the ambassador's daughter, and then high fived some hairy foot children. That's style Dummy Denny never had!

I don't deny aragorn has style. While he gracefully dances over it, the bar is pretty low here. Denethor was a lesser sire of greater men.

The man sent some of the city's only defenders into a battle he knew was unwinnable because he was throwing a temper tantrum.

Whether either of them is fit for leadership or has the rizz to do so, I say Down with all monarchies, embrace anarcho-syndicalist communes.
