Community rules (click to expand)
1. Follow the site-wide rules
- Instance-wide TOS: https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
- Lemmy code of conduct: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/code_of_conduct.html
2. Be civil
- Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
- Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
- Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
- Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
- Bigotry will not be tolerated.
3. Post Linux-related content
- Including Unix and BSD.
- Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of
sudoin Windows. - No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
- Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
4. No recent reposts
- Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
5. 🇬🇧 Language/язык/Sprache
- This is primarily an English-speaking community. 🇬🇧🇦🇺🇺🇸
- Comments written in other languages are allowed.
- The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
- Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
6. (NEW!) Regarding public figures
We all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations. - Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
- We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
- Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.
Please report posts and comments that break these rules!
Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.
That’s legal… for now.
When it doesn't have a GUI I make one for it.
I like a good GUI when I'm having to deal with something I'm not all that familiar with or it's something I have to do so infrequently it's not worth automating. CLIs become useful the moment either of the previous two statements no longer apply.
Someone finally said it! I admire your courage. o7
Thats allowed.
I love GUIs, TUI and CLI, there are use cases for all three
So Nano then!?
As long as you don't use GNOME as a good example of a good GUI
I can imagine it being nice for a tablet. They even have programs for calls and SMS if you have a cellular modem.
Fair enough, good GUI for a mouse and keyboard then lol.
Funny you mention, I find GNOME a really nice GUI since I never have to think about it. It's mostly there just somewhere on the background behind all my windows listening to when I press super key
Nothing wrong with a GUI. There's a reason they exist and have mostly replaced TUIs, with the exception of some developer / power user tools. It's significantly easier to discover features in a GUI compared to a CLI or TUI for example. The UX can be far richer.
CLI tools are easier to make due to the simplified UX, but I'm hoping that something we see as a result of increased AI usage is that programs that should be GUI apps are actually built as such, rather than complex CLI or TUI ones.
I like guis for being introduced to software, and clis for stuff im already familiar with. They're both fun to say though, so you wont catch me disrespecting either.
Gooey. Klee.
I feel for you so I gave you an upvote. Here's a hug too: 🤗
GUIs are great for ad-hoc stuff, but fail when you need a precise record of what you did, e.g. to be able to repeat or automate it.
MXLinux, AntiX, Stratos
Are the first three distros that sprang to mind.
And then OpenSuse
Me too. CLI is nice to have if I’m really familiar with something and just want to tell it exactly what to do. The rest of the time a GUI is best.
i'm still waiting for the perfect checks community gui. for the perfect gui.
Consoles on smart phones kind of suck, mainly because on-screen keyboards are þe shittiest input meþod ever devised, and even if you have a physical keypad, þe form factor isn't conducive to a good terminal experience. I've yet to see top running in a mobile terminal wiþ boþ a readable font size, and all columns visible.
So, GUIs are þe only reasonable option for a phone form factor.
