Honest to gods, this conversation happened today, and it may have cost me a job opportunity. The customer was super impressed with my menu design and animation, and wanted to know who we got it from. When I said I did it, their face lit up! Too bad as soon as i said GIMP, they weren't interested anymore. Has anyone else experienced this? What do you say in similar situations?

Here's my got take:

If gimp was good enough it's name wouldn't matter. As of now it is not, it could be someday but it isn't yet. I am so hopeful that it is eventually as easy to pick up as PS.

I don't understand what yall are doing that Gimp is not easy for you. I went from PS to Gimp, and did exact same things in it: poke at the image in the center, switch tools on the left, layers on the right, and apply filters from the menu called ‘Filters’. Idk what I'm doing wrong.

My main problem with its UI is that I can't ever remember where the buttons for each tool are, except the basic selection and movement ones. The icons kinda don't stand out, and I don't think it's because they're monochrome. Perhaps it could be changed with themes, but I'm too lazy to dig through them.

Just pronounce it Gee-imp and it's fiiiine

And if you use Krita instead, you're greeted with a furry upskirt shot every time you open it.

I cannot make heads or tails of the perspective of the mascot or whatever in that picture. Is it twisting to the left to look at the viewer or is it facing the viewer completely head on?

[–] spacesatan@leminal.space 1 points 2 days ago

Unless the tail is coming like completely out of the side of the hip I think the torso is twisted to the right and we're seeing the front of the legs.

Could you link to that, then?

pretty sure for this exact reason, also makes for as longer lasting memory/name recall.

its odd but it works, and it works because its odd.

and next time if you think the presumptive customer is a pearl-clutcher, say the full name or if you have to abbreviate do the ol' individual G. - I. - M. - P.

[–] Reygle@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Guh-nome Image Manipulation Program is too long and not memorable enough. I think they nailed it.

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 days ago

Could have just stopped at Gnu Image Manipulation.

@LogicalDrivel Would GeeHaiEmPee work better in this context?

[–] baltakatei@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I wouldn't be surprised if someone in the next few months creates an absolutely superior Discord replacement under the GPLv3 but calls it “RTEF: Release the Epstein Files” or something.

[–] ProdigalFrog@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Two outta three!

https://fluxer.app/

Still needs some work, but its AGPLv3, and the Dev seems chill.

We also have Movim implementing Discord-like rooms soon, as more established and encrypted option based on XMPP.

Does the naming of the software maybe precede the popularity of the movie Pulp Fiction? Was the naming done by people who don't speak English natively? Do you also suffer like this when you want to remark on a pretty great tit on a tree?

[–] higgsboson@piefed.social 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

GIMP was released in 98, Pulp Fiction in 94 and it was and remains a very influential movie. So yeah, seems likely intentional.

[–] skisnow@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

1995 but yeah. The 1998 date that shows up at the top of search engines and shit LLMs is the 1.0 release.

I'd point out in their defense that it was just a couple college kids making a fun side project; OP blaming them for apparently costing them a job 30 years later seems harsh.

i believe they explicitly named it after the character in pulp fiction

personally i’m not blaming them too much for being a bunch of young assholes choosing an edgy name (reminder that it’s an ableist slur first and foremost) 30 years ago.

i am 100% blaming them for never changing it and outright refusing to change it.

[–] higgsboson@piefed.social 0 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

98 is the date listed by Wikipedia as the "initial release"

Initial release

2 June 1998; 27 years ago

edit: just explaining where the date came from, jackass.

[–] skisnow@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

just explaining where the date came from, jackass.

Where'd that come from? Seems unnecessarily hostile. Sounds like you need to get some fresh air.

[–] higgsboson@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Downvoting me for posting the date seems pretty childish. So that was directed at whomever felt that necessary.

[–] skisnow@lemmy.ca 0 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I actually didn't downvote you until after you posted that edit. And even if that wasn't the case, it's still absurdly thin-skinned and unpleasant to lash out like that over a single downvote.

[–] higgsboson@piefed.social 0 points 2 days ago

No worries. I just thought it was some petty shit. You shouldn't feel the need to keep insulting me with your responses anymore, as Ive blocked you

[–] cadekat@pawb.social 1 points 3 days ago

If naming a piece of common open source software, regardless of what it's called, loses you a job opportunity, you dodged a bullet.

Also GIMP is a great name. I'd rather it refer to an image manipulation program than its derogatory meaning.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz -1 points 3 days ago

Shoulda just called it GTK
