Absolutely important to keep boycotting, even if things go back to "normal" if only to show that this stupidity has real world costs.

[–] ageedizzle@piefed.ca 45 points 1 month ago (1 children)

We also need to keep trying to diversify our trade. Even if things go back to normal the US has shown us that they are unstable economic partners

[–] TribblesBestFriend@startrek.website 36 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Even if things go back to normal the US has shown us that they are unstable ~~economic partners~~ *

[–] forrgott@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I could've told you that years ago, since I've lived in this cess pool all my life ..

[–] ageedizzle@piefed.ca 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)

What's it like living there right now?

[–] forrgott@lemmy.sdf.org 21 points 1 month ago

For me, surreal currently. Live in a somewhat more rural area. But surrounded by racist hateful zombies.

Every time I hear somebody having a conversation in a foreign language, I get a wave of fear in my heart. For their safety. The violence hasn't reached my hometown yet, but I know it's coming.

My father and I were estranged by the rest of my brothers; but now I must turn my back on him for the safety of my own family. He's lost. A whole life eagerly internalizing the hateful rhetoric of the Republicans. I've done my best, let him be a part of my life for as long as I can. But he is a danger to my children.

I've seen through the charade to the festering evil underneath all my life. But have never found the means nor opportunity to act against it, as I definitely was not born into wealth. So I do my best to focus on the small things, to find the good where I can.

In short, it fucking sucks.

Also American. Being a minority (specifically trans) is fucking scary here right now, and it's depressing knowing how many people see us so negatively now. Rightfully so, but as someone who lives closer to Canada than the next closest state, it's saddening how much we've hurt our friends and neighbors.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Trump will veto this if it gets through congress.Β

There’s zero chance this does anything. But it’s a nice reminder the Republicans are morons.Β

[–] darkdemize@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Wait, can he veto a bill that doesn't pass? Isn't that literally just an EO with extra steps?

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 month ago

If it passes then he can veto it.Β

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

There are no checks and balances in the US.

There's lots of checks happening. They're not balanced though.

Oh, absolutely, I'm thinking in terms of future administrations and such. (Assuming free and fair elections actually happen.)

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 month ago

Anyone who is smart enough to be part of the boycott isn't dumb enough to stop it over this.

[–] HonoredMule@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I wouldn't worry about that. Getting by presidential veto requires a two-thirds vote.

[–] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 4 points 1 month ago

Oh, absolutely. I'm thinking in terms of future administrations and such. (Assuming free and fair elections actually happen.)

[–] SirMaple__@lemmy.ca 49 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Won't stop me from boycotting. It's going take the US decades to recover from all the shit the cheeto stained pedophile felon has done.

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago

I'm not Canadian, however I am also boycotting anything american. However when the VP couch fucker dies I'll have rethink, but I'll most probably be dead myself by then.

I'm also 'poisoning the well' by telling everyone who'll listen what the Nazied States of america is doing. Most are horrified and don't know the extent of the orange paedo's corruption and depravities. This bullshit is going to be generational for some people.

[–] Sturgist@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

Still want this on a hoodie. Like....so sooooo badly.

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

That is the neat part, it won't recover.

Never recovered from the civil war, still a divided country along racism to this day.

Never recovered from WWI, it caused WWII.

Never recovered from WWII, it caused the Cold War.

Never recovered from Vietnam, still murdering civilians even though we realized it was wrong.

Never recovered from the war on drugs, millions of families destroyed and minorities oppressed.

Never recovered from 9/11, tortured people for fun no consequences.

Never recovered from the first Trump presidency, it set the stage for round two authoritarian bogaloo.

And please boycott forever. Also start examining corporations from your country closely as well. This wealthy corporate takeover is not limited to the US.

[–] Gyangrene@piefed.ca 24 points 1 month ago

219-211. That spread makes this vote meaningless, because almost HALF of our former ally's Congress wants this to continue.

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Trump has previously threatened to endorse the political rivals of Republican lawmakers who have refused to back his administration's policies

Is that actually a threat anymore?

[–] Smaile@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

Trump might think it is but it's becoming clear he's not doing to well anymore.

[–] Janx@piefed.social 14 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

CONGRESS has the "power of the purse". I don't care what Republicans ignore, or what the Supreme Court lets him get away with, that's literally in the Constitution.Β PRESIDENT TRUMP CAN'T UNILATERALLY DECIDE TARIFFS!

[–] maplesaga@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

The president can impose tariffs if imports threaten national security. He cited fentanyl, and therefore its a tiny threat, which its not stipulated how severe it need to be.

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Enjoy your little dream world.

[–] TJDetweiler@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

Ya trump can literally do whatever tf he wants. Who's gunna stop him?

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 13 points 1 month ago (2 children)

So who is going to stop him from enacting them anyway?

[–] BurgerBaron@piefed.social 8 points 1 month ago

Right here is why I do not care about their House vote.

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

Or even if he chooses to follow it took them a year for 6 Republicans to vote.

He'll just start some other bullshit while they twiddle their thumbs again

[–] puppinstuff@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 month ago

It’s a good gesture but they need 2/3 of the Senate to overturn the EO. Not holding my breath.

Only solace is that a lot of red state Senators will be putting party over constituents and hopefully ruining their reelection chances.

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

As a Canadian, I appreciate the gesture, fuck no I'm not stopping my boycott and I'm not going to travel to your fucked up country.

[–] TBi@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Stop the boycott only if they stand up and impeach him!

[–] Medic8teMe@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

How are they to impeach without a working government or judiciary? Impeachment is not the answer to fascism.

[–] Reannlegge@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 month ago

How’s about never stop the boycott.

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 month ago

Doesn’t matter - the syphilitic dementia patient has veto power.

[–] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

This should have happened 5 minutes after the pedophile announced the tariffs. The damage has already been done you fucking GOP morons.

[–] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

Dear Canada, please boycott us harder.

This is just virtue signaling. Trump will just veto it as it's not anywhere near 2/3.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

this is step 1 of 100+
