+5 Yes, Puerto Rico is widely considered a colony—or often described as the world's oldest colony—due to its status as an unincorporated U.S. territory. While residents are U.S. citizens, they lack voting representation in Congress, cannot vote for president,

While I understand most Americans are apparently racist idiots, I find that stat hard to believe.

In all the hoopla around the halftime show, I never once read anything other than he is Puerto Rican. Not even in the maga content the algorithm insists I want to see (to the extent I didn’t immediately block).

Maybe this is being too pedantic but it would be more believable if

  • “73% of Americans don’t understand that puerto ricans are us citizens”. Because we are that dumb.

Replying to that German guy somewhere in the comments - Spanish is spoken all over the us as the second most common language. Certainly anywhere in the south you’ll hear it all the time, but even up here in New England it’s very common. There’s no reason to be surprised by hearing it nor to think they are anything other than Americans who are speaking Spanish

So it's kinda No Taxation Without Representation situation? Or does that only apply to white people?

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 3 days ago

There are lower/no taxes there. That's why so many conservatives move there, or buy property there - particularly after a hurricane. Disaster capitalism.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I mean DC has plenty of white people but they're in a similar situation. Although at least they get to vote for president.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 4 points 2 days ago

Still worth considering that DC is called "Chocolate City" for a reason. It's a majority minory city. I've encountered at least a few political scientists who firmly believe that the biggest barrier for DC gaining statehood is that historically the American imperial project will support social goods until they're extended to Black people (with the New Deal being the commonly referenced example of this, as well as why building a gentler form of capitalism through social democratic reform should be viewed as good, but not as enough)

A movement to turn pro sports into quasi nationalist rallies, with barely a peep about it, is far more alarming than ignorance about the vagarities of US territorial policy. Most people can’t even name the vice president! This is a very strange kind of manufactured outrage.

Canada will give them a home. Lord knows we need a friendly southern escape.

That would be an incredible change for the island. Right now their economy is kneecapped by byzantine US shipping laws. The jones act gives american shippers complete control over goods going to and from the island, driving up prices.

Falling under the care of a sanier nation, one who will help them rollout a reliable solar grid instead of dismantiling it, would do wonders.

Made up statistic aside, why is not knowing the nationality of a celebrity... bad? I don't even know his real name, this seems like a stretch to make it into american chauvinism rather than people just not knowing about a celebrity. Is that the joke?

[–] fulcrummed@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

It’s relevant here because of the backlash from maga morons when it was announced a guy with brown skin would be doing the half time show. There was a lot of nationalist rhetoric bouncing around, being used to justify their racism.

It was all bs as their arguments were being levelled at an American citizen as he is Puerto Rican.

It was annexed fair and square, peacefully and democratically according to international rules-based order.

Now other countries are the problem. They're the bad guys.

In a proper world, this would discredit her from being a pundit.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Wow. The ignorance is strong with that one
