The US is cooked, if city police keep aligning WITH the fascists; this guy obviously will not side with the people if given a choice. If he's OK with ICE wearing masks then he obviously isn't going to be willing to arrest them for any valid reason.

Mayors need to start forcing their chiefs of police to sign documents explicitly resolving to protect the people of their city over and above ICE staff or any masked federal force, or fire them if they refuse. Make them take a side and replace them if their side is not on the citizens of their city.

No one would ever accuse the LAPD of being on the side of the people. This stance is totally in line with their past history. I don't know if the city can force them to comply or even if they would if they could.

Considering the LAPD is by many considered a gang in itself, and it's been proven that within its ranks there are various "police gangs" with matching tattoos and the whole shebang, I have little faith in them being on our side. In case anyone forgets, the TV show The Shield was based on the infamous Rampart division of the LAPD. Or remember who beat Rodney King. Or fucked up the OJ case trying to frame him(when he probably would have been convicted if they hadn't fucked it up). I only hear of the NYPD getting as much hate as them.

I have a family member who is CHP. He said if they ever see LAPD pull someone over on the highway they will normally join, not because of a turf issue, and not to give backup (though that is the answer they give). They actually do it to watch the LAPD. And wow does he have some stories of how their tune changed the second he showed up to "assist".

I think you’re confusing the LAPD and LASD, the latter of which is rife with gangs. If the LAPD has gangs, it doesn’t compare with the LASD.

They still suck either way.

[–] edible_funk@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

It's actually both, but I do believe the lasd is notably worse if possible.

Police chiefs are so politically powerful that they have forced mayors at times.

It's honestly wild to see anyone think police would be the ones to save us right now.

[–] bagsy@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

It's a testament to the power of unions that they keep saying we don't need.

We need to look to our history and not repeat the same mistakes.

CA penal codes 834, 835, and 837 empower CA citizens to arrest any other citizen who commits a crime in their presence.

CA penal code 142 makes it a crime for any police officer who witnesses a crime to willfully refuse to arrest or accept the arrest of anyone who has committed a crime.

If they won't work, put them in the slave pens. A few months of hard labor should remind them of their place. Obedience is not a choice for police.

[–] Magnum 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You want to put them in hard labor camps?

[–] KingGimpicus@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

Prison. We call them "prisons" now.

I don't want ICE/CPB anonymously shooting at police, either.

But I especially don't want ICE/CPB anonymously shooting at protesters, legal observers, residents, high school students, children, moms, aunts, brothers, fathers, grandparents.

It would be nice if LAPD would side with that part of the public, too, here.

[–] CubitOom 12 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It ~~would be nice if~~ should be required for LAPD enforcing state laws.

Chain of command unless i don't like it. The Bible except the parts I didn't read. The Constitution unless they are a criminal.

so he will be let go for not doing is job and replaced by someone who will, yeah?

Local officials are generally corrupt, so the police chief, whom is often fascist themself along with their higher ups and rank and file, can take any of them down for firing them, especially if they put a reformer in there, as the system unites to take down any sort of reformer in the cj system, mostly prosecutors to date.

Step one is to get better people elected, like don't elect rich people with their hands in shady deals that could be accused by the police of being corrupt. Step something is definitely getting police representative of the community and not of the 4th reich to look over our progressive cities.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 1 month ago

I mean little podunks but this is LA.

[–] decapitae@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 month ago

It's like these "officials" live in their own little 'faux mews' world. Time to oust and joust! We need officials that represent and protect the civilian population, not seek to subdue it and force it's compliance with fascism.

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago

I'm sure this 'realization' will affect his decisions going forward.

...

Right?
