Can you imagine, years ago how the internet was before? We know Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, Youtube. We knew blogger, Tumblr, Skyrock... and long before, it was the forum era as phpBB..and mail-lists.

Seems like a nice occasion for a reminder that this stuff is all made and run on a volunteer basis. There are many ways to contribute, but the easiest by far is by donating a little bit of money on a regular basis! Don't be deterred by feeling you have to give a lot - if a lot of people give a little that's much better. So give a little!
I use Liberapay, but patreon and ko-fi links are available under the "Donate" menu entry at piefed.social. The average LiberaPay contributor gives less than a dollar per weekβwhich is awesome.
Alternatively, if you're on another instance, consider giving a little bit to your instance to help keep it running! It's all running on love and goodwill, and it works precisely because people like you decide it's worth contributing. :)
It's absolutely worth it to give to the Piefed project for how much effort these folks put in. If I were a developer I'd contribute that way, too.
We need some new (a couple) of general-use instances to help direct this traffic! Piefed.social will help you and redirect traffic to you.

It's kinda geared towards South Africans, but it'll be a place where anyone is welcome. I still need to do some housekeeping though.

As much as the influx of Europeans to the fediverse is lovely to see, the European/North American bias here is really striking. That's of course not a problem of too many Europeans, but rather not enough other people.
Thanks, it's quite fun to setup and run an instance and helping the community grow. Hopefully I can get a bunch of South African and Africans to join my instance.

Hosted in the Nordics and committed to not being dependent on US tech. (using Hetzner Finland and BunnyCDN)

Yeah, general use with somewhat if a focus on the Nordics "market", but I'm not planning on launching competing communities against anything existing.
Sure, but I'm more thinking about increasing server spread across Piefed rather than specific communities as such.

What caused the surge?
Multiple advertisement posts on DeGoogle, a canadian subreddit and BuyFromEu.
And Trump for threatening to invade Canada and Greenland.

It seems people stuck around after to a pretty exceptional degree after the previous surge in June last year, when the number of active users was multiplied by four within a little more than a month. Hopefully the same will be true this time around!
Also curious what's next for this graph. Doesn't really seem to be slowing down.

I just signed up for lemmy (brand new here). Can someone help explain piefed? I looked it up and it seems it used the same protocalls? I downloaded voyager app to use Lemmy - do I need to do something else to use piefed? I'm sort of confused, because a cursory search sounds like piefed works on voyager as well. . . If I'm already on Lemmy, am I basically also on piefed, just a different instance?

Same protocol, yes, so they share all the same content. And a lot of apps originally built for Lemmy now work with PieFed too. Voyager is one of them so if you have an account on a PieFed server/instance you can just add that to Voyager.
When using a mobile app there's not much difference for the average person. But PieFed instances have a lot of mod and admin tools which will tend to improve the quality of the content and people you come across, if that's how the server admins want to make it. https://join.piefed.social/features

Piefed is also a part of the Fediverse, and reads Lemmy instances. Lemmy.zip also has a Piefed server at http://piefed.zip/.
So essentially it's just another instance? Do I need to create an account on a piefed instance to get the benefits of piefed vs Lemmy (which I'm not sure what I would actually get different).

What is causing such sudden rapid growth?

A couple of successful Reddit posts. This last jump was from r/BuyFromEU.
Thats how I ended up here. Even deleted my reddit account.

Just didn't delete my Reddit yet. There's some subreddits I need there that don't have the equivalent here yet.
But the plan is to start using this as my primary, and only go there when I need those.

Jip it's literally like 5 reddit posts over the last week-ish
They've gotten ~700,000 views now
It's an actual good increase but not starting the graph at zero is misleading. It didn't go from zero to the moon, it got from 1.5k to 3.5k, which is more than double, but not as exponential as the graph shows.
