As for a specific instance, maybe point to medium-sized servers, so bigger ones don't get more stressed than they already are, and the user isn't greeted by a barren default feed were they to join a smaller one?

I for one value a bit of a barrier to entry on my social media. It's not like new users are being tasked with anything difficult. It ensures the community members here are, at the very least, literate.
Shouldn't the closest server be suggested?
If they are too stubborn or ignorant to choose a server they should stay away IMO. I don't want another reddit.
