Strictly from a physics/electrical standpoint, I'd like more information on how a single lightning strike can hit 89 people. Shouldn't it have followed the single fastest path to ground, and hit 1 person?

A quote from someone's professor:

"Everything is a conductor if the voltage is high enough"

With that in mind, as the electrons follow the path of least resistance they spread out from what's called ground current, sometimes back into people nearby. Jumping into them was less resistence than continuing through the ground so that's where it went.

Also you can always get forking at the end I suppose but I've always heard the ground current explanation.
