This sounds like a stupid question, but I'm being genuine.

He is telling people to eat more meat, which sounds absolutely insane to me.

What qualifies him to give health advice ? Why are americans trusting him ?

As others have pointed out, being a dry addict ISN'T a reason do dismiss what someone is saying, even about health.

Being the guy whose brain worm died from mercury poisoning, though..

Even that isn't the problem.

He was already promoting anti-vacs conspiracy theories in 2004. The tapeworm was removed in 2010. I doubt he had it for that long

A lot of us are dumber than shit. They elected a president who is dumber than shit and he picked a secretary of health who is dumber than shit. I personally ignore everything RFK Jr. says.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

Most of us aren’t.

The ones that are, are already so far down the rabbit hole they wouldn’t recognize reality anyway.

[–] BilboBargains@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

It's not a reason to discount someone's views, is why. Addicts are still people, worthy of respect and dignity. The real reason to discount RFK is that he's wrong about most topics pertaining to health and he doesn't respect the science or evidence that contradict his opinions. The problem is that most of the electorate is scientifically illiterate, the end result being an over privileged dunce like RFK deciding how your health care is organised. Can't put an insurance premium on that. Good luck guys.

Nobody is trusting him.

He’s unqualified just like everyone else Trump appoints. Why is this a surprise?

[–] BussyCat@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You would be absolutely surprised how many people are trusting him…

Shake shack is advertising with MAHA as a tagline

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago

Good to know. I don't want whatever they are letting slip into their food.

[–] mudkip@lemdro.id 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Because we don't have a choice of who is in that position. The Grand Old Fascist Party has completely removed any form of democracy in this country. So now we are just stuck watching it happen.

Most of us aren't. Hell, most of us didn't listen to the Secretary of Health and Human Services before.

As an American: I’m not. Just bc he was appointed doesn’t mean I trust him (nor did I vote for trump). The people that do believe RFJ Jr were fucking crazy conspiracy theorists to begin with

This is very much a "You don't know what you don't know" kind of situation.

I once read a case about a physicians assistant who worked under a bariatric surgeon for 15 years. After completing thousands of bariatric surgeries under the surgeon, he started his own clinic and hired a "supervising surgeon" who was retired and never there. Meaning, even though he was not a doctor, he was acting as the only surgeon. He botched botched dozens of surgeries, he caused pain and suffering to dozens of other people. He had no idea what the surgeon was doing that he wasn't, because he wasn't trained to perform that role. Instead of recognizing he couldn't do it, he just assumed he knew anything necessary.

People take that approach to a lot of things. Very common in the law for people to look something on chatgpt and get mad at their lawyer for not following completely non-sensical advice.

Why would Americans elect a serial bankruptcy business man, narcissst, and convicted sexual assault felon to appoint this loon?

Because there are no simple answers.

47 wants to disrupt and cause chaos in everything. The department of health is just another area for chaos, hence the appointment of this guy. I think it's fairly safe that most Americans - and that includes many nominal supporters of the current GOP cultish clowncar - do not take their health advise from worm brain. It's just unfortunate that he's in a position of power where he will cause harm that will prevail long after he's retired, or dead.

[–] kandoh@reddthat.com 4 points 1 day ago

Because he says 'things weren't like this when I was a kid' and it resonated hard with dumb people who see stuff like autism and transgender problems to be eradicated

[–] Phineaz@feddit.org 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Fuck that guy, but: Former heroin addict sounds respectable.

[–] palordrolap@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago

True. He's in government, and specifically that government, so he has access to all the money and drugs he wants, so if he's remaining clean, he's doing exceptionally well on that score.

This should not be taken as an endorsement of his abilities as a politician or his knowledge about science. Plenty of other evidence suggests he should be doing neither of those. Hell, I'm not even sure I'd follow his advice if I was a heroin addict trying to get off the stuff.

[–] BanMe@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

I've been addicted to uh, almost everything besides heroin and gambling. I still give better advice than deflated-scrotum-face. But I also know how science works and why it's a good thing. I believe in germ theory. I don't throw roadkill on the roof of my car and eat it tartare later.

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip 9 points 1 day ago

An avid user of drugs sounds like someone who would be knowledgeable about them, so clearly a smart choice

[–] tomcatt360@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

I'm an American, and I'm certainly not taking any advice from him

I mean shit, i can't tell you how many people, doctors included, have been aghast that i might have to take a pill every day the rest of my life for blood pressure. as though it's an addiction. people are fucking idiots.

[–] notsosure@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Lack of education.

Yeah but he has such a smooth velvety voice, who could refuse?

(No offense to decent people with “textured” timbres)

The new food pyramid is just as influenced by lobbyist as the previous one. Only this time it's the life stock industry.

Plus anti-woke MAGA wants to distance itself from vegans as much as possible.

But also, lean, fresh meat isn't that bad. It does have a lot of protein, with really balanced amino-acids. You don't have to carefully combine grains and legumes, in order to not miss out on essential nutrients.

Meat also has a lot of bioavailable iron and vitamin B12. Both are important and usually insufficient in a vegan diet.

If you count fish as meat, it also has bioavailable Omega-3. Especially fatty ocean-fishes like salmon. If you don't eat fish, you either have to eat microalgae-oil or severely reduce your omega-6 consumption (no chips for you. They are fried in sunflower oil).

In contrast to fresh meat, most processed meats are really bad:

  • Cured meat has sodium nitrate. That's a known carcinogen.
  • Smoked meat has smoke particles. That's another known carcinogen.
  • Charred meat has charring. Another carcinogen.

And you also shouldn't eat a lot of fat from land animals. It has a lot of saturated fats which, you guessed it, cause cancer.

Just because junior is saying stuff doesn't mean Americans are listening or obeying.

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 day ago

It's not like we're all doing that. Or even most of us.
