The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, inaugurated the meeting, which is being attended by the Panel of Facilitators, comprised of former heads of State, the Togolese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert Dussey, heads of the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community, among other partners.
Youssouf reaffirmed Africa’s unwavering commitment to ending the crisis in eastern DRC and praised the leadership of head of State Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé for accepting the mandate to serve as mediator for the continental organization, in accordance with the values of Pan-Africanism.
Despite numerous mediation initiatives, violence persists in Goma, Bukavu, and Uvira, causing thousands of deaths and displacing hundreds of thousands of people.
In this context, he emphasized that African-led efforts must now take priority, giving concrete meaning to the principle of “African solutions to African problems.”
He underscored the need for a proactive and inclusive framework that fosters dialogue between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, engages neighboring countries, addresses the root causes of the conflict, and safeguards Congolese sovereignty.
