President Donald Trump said Wednesday that “we shouldn’t even have an election,” as he complained about the political risks his party faces in the 2026 midterms and boasted about his accomplishments.

Trump made the comment in an interview with Reuters while venting about the long-standing reality that the party of a sitting president often loses seats in midterm elections.

[–] bhamlin@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

That's his entertainment for later. 🤢

[–] MyMindIsLikeAnOcean@piefed.world 25 points 7 hours ago

There’s about a 106% chance that Trump is going to use one “war” or another to try to avoid any future election.

[–] circuitfarmer@lemmy.world 44 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Oh cool, the thing everyone with a brain has said would happen is happening

[–] 4grams@awful.systems 11 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Most days it feels like all 7 of us..

[–] circuitfarmer@lemmy.world 7 points 8 hours ago

I like to think the number nationwide is sizeable but media control and especially social media algorithms make it hard to see. But you could be right and there are only dozens of us.

[–] Donebrach@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago

Sure wish all the Trump headlines just had pictures of Salacious Crumb attached to them because they basically already do but ya know, gotta account for morons to feel ways about stuff based on pigtures over words.

Also hope he and his Crumb’s Vance et al, meet a similar end.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 12 points 8 hours ago

Huh.

I wonder where all those Enlightened Centrists (TM) and holier-than-thou leftists are at these days? They sure were preening a lot right after Donvict's second (supposed) election.

They sure seem to be pretty quiet these days....

Do you know where there are no elections, Donny? Inside a jail cell. Where you belong since some time.

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 43 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

You, uh... You do know how absolutely fucked that is right? That you guys don't have voting in prisons, that you can prevent convicts from voting?

Like, when you're asking yourself "How did we get to the point where our president is openly flirting with cancelling elections?", some of that is that you guys accepted as normal levels of anti-democratic behaviour that most democratic nations consider you absolutely insane for endorsing.

In Canada we literally set up polling stations in the prisons. You can be a serial killer doing multiple life sentences, you still get the right to vote. That is a bedrock, fundamental right that no one, especially not the government, ever gets to take away from you.

Maybe if the US treated voting rights in the same way, you might be a little less fucked up right now.

I wasn't aware that some meant 40 years

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 11 hours ago

He was at jail cell levels back in like 2017.

[–] wuffah@lemmy.world 45 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

At this point, I think we shouldn’t even have a president.

[–] LadyMeow@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 9 hours ago

I thinking the current one shouldn’t even have a head.

Germany 1933 (Wikipedia): The election saw Nazi stormtroopers unleash a widespread campaign of violence against the Communist Party (KPD), left-wingers, trade unionists, the Social Democratic Party, and the Centre Party. They were the last multi-party elections in a united Germany until the all-German vote in 1990, though by 1933, the democratic process had ceased to be free or fair.

The GOP using ICE has already unleashed a widespread campaign of violence and IMO they're well on the way to making sure the democratic process no longer exists in 2026.

[–] dellish@lemmy.world 4 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

The main difference, and really only hope at this point, is ICE appear to be pretty indiscriminate in their application of violence. If it was more targeted I'd be more worried, but at this point it seems their managing to piss off a majority of people.

[–] spaghettiwestern@sh.itjust.works 7 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

With few exceptions, ICE and the GOP are targeting protesters and brown people. As a rule they aren't GOP voters.

[–] cowboydan@quokk.au 33 points 11 hours ago

How about a funeral instead?

[–] ChonkyLincoln@lemmy.zip 10 points 10 hours ago

Trump. Stop being racist.

It’s called “ERECTION” and you haven’t managed one in decades.

When you did, the pre-teens found it embarrassingly small and 100% unwanted

His current girlfriend looks pissed at him.

[–] aarch0x40@piefed.social 20 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Donny seems hell bent on creating constitutional crises.

The only reason he hasn’t is Democrat capitulation. They should have forced a crisis long ago.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 19 points 12 hours ago

Constitutional crisis, economic crisis, and a global political crisis.

[–] itsalldownhill@lemmy.org 5 points 11 hours ago

There will not be a fair election in 2026. Trump will declare martial law in 2026 to enforce that. Then he will have control of every local government and the regime will hold power for decades. There are plenty of things we can do to help prevent it without killing anyone, but zero of those things involve standing on a street holding a sign.

[–] santa@sh.itjust.works 1 points 8 hours ago

We shouldn’t even have you in the oval but can’t get cake and eat it too.

Get bent!

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 3 points 11 hours ago

Broadcasting intent.

Gee, i wonder why there are political risks for his party in the first place. Must be obama, biden and those radical dems.
