Luckily this is not being discussed everywhere. There are still places on Earth, where this is totally normal, a sign of good manners. I never care who the person behind me is. I hold doors for everyone and I do it the way they do not feel they have to rush.
Unpopular Opinion
Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!
How voting works:
Vote the opposite of the norm.
If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.
Guidelines:
Tag your post, if possible (not required)
- If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
- If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].
Rules:
1. NO POLITICS
Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.
2. Be civil.
Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...
Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.
5. No trolling.
This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.
6. Defend your opinion
This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.
Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
Not unpopular at all.
Well… interesting. Guess all the cretins live in my metropolis.
It is interesting. Definitely the norm in areas I've lived and worked in (various places in Northern England).
What country/region or city do you live in where this isn't normal? (Feel free to be approximate if needed for privacy).
Yes, I was taught to always hold the door. I will hold the door for you if you are even ten, twelve or fifteen feet back. It is polite to hustle a little if you are at that fifteen foot extreme
How in the world could it possibly be view as polite to expect someone else hustle because of your own personal weird quirk?
I don’t mind returning a little consideration when I am offered some. Imagine.
Depends on the location I guess. Here it's mostly done and since it doesn't really take any effort I would agree a look behind and holding the door is something everyone should do.
Yours is the first comment I’m seeing, apparently most folks are finding their world hosts sufficient door holding, mine does not.
I see people hold the door open for strangers all the time, so it doesn't seem unpopular to me. In fact, I can't remember ever having someone let the door close on me when they know I'm behind them.
Honestly if I'm more than a couple of steps behind them I'd rather catch the door or just open it myself than feel pressed to hurry while they wait for me. I appreciate that they're being considerate to me though.
For others, I'll hold it open if they'll be at the door in a second or two but not if it means standing around or pressuring them to hurry.
It’s their choice to hold the door. Take your time.
If the person is directly behind me, I'll keep the door open while simultaneously walking through the doorway (I don't stop and wait) so that the door at least doesn't close in their face. They still have to grab the door to prevent it from closing though.
I really don't like standing still and holding the door open and making the people who were behind me go ahead of me. And I hate when someone does that to me. It feels like a very antiquated and patronizing gesture.
The polite thing to do if you are that second person is to take the door and hold it for the next person who then should take it and so on.
This should be a matter of course in general interaction with one another, as long as one is not physically impaired. Just as one does not stop in the middle of the aisle in the supermarket or block it with a shopping cart. People are becoming increasingly inconsiderate.
I literally just watch people routinely dropping the door in people’s faces. It’s weird.
Yes, that is one of the most stereotypical polite things that exists.
And it’s a pleasure to do… cretins don’t know what they’re missing.
Why unpopular? I do that all the time without thinking.
You were raised right. It’s a simple pleasure to do but I just see that very few folks seem to remember it.
