Sometimes if your interests do not align with the Fediverse...It can be an experience that causes you to feel alone. I think coming out your cave and being the change you want to see is one of the best ways to create communities! This is the greatest strength of the Fediverse, building community is an exercise that does pay off. It does take time and you can encounter some cool peeps.

Lemmy's general purpose discussion community with no specific topic.
Sitewide lemmy.world rules apply here.
Additionally, this is a no AI content community. We are here for human interaction, not AI slop! Posts or comments flagged as AI generated will be removed.
Agree! Thank you for posting. I try to post too, but it's pretty thankless sometimes.
It's just upvotes and comments as thanks.
Sometimes it's nice. Like it takes much less effort to reach the front page of a community than a subreddit. But other times you write all this text and only a few people comment, and you just feel the crickets :/. Now i know how my online zoom teachers feel when they say "unmute your mic" and noone does
I tried posting some stuff for a niche comm a while back. A bunch of upvotes, but no conversation or meaningful comments.
Meanwhile, I post something similar on a niche subreddit and get some great comments, encouragement, and friendly chit-chat. I wish we had that here.
Honestly it's big enough for me. I browse /all usually and theres plenty of content. I guess I can understand missing the variety of niche communities on reddit.
/all by hot is really depressing and rage inducing because it's mostly news.
/all by new is a random mixed bag, still feels like /all by hot though
I guess I'm mostly lamenting the lack of active text based discussion communities, and friend finding ones
I have been sorting /all by active and it works decently well filtering out news.
I should create like a custom feed with text posts only and a couple of keyword filters
There are too many weirdos on the fediverse. Like, if I was furry and liked furry porn and faffing off about linux all day, i'd be in heaven. I've had to block dozens of hyper specific furry porn communities Every freaking day I have to block a new one.
But I am not interested in those things. Most of what I'm interested in is very under-represented on lemmy. Current affairs, neutral political commentary, world news, education, art, literature, etc.
News articles would be better if they weren't endlessly politics and people spouting crazy extremist nonsense in the comments. But the userbase is mostly extremists.
I also don't really like how so much of the content is edge lord teenager nonsense. There are so few chill people on lemmy, and sadly a lot of them get brigading and banned by the pyschos with an ax to grind. I've had to block like 100s of people in the past few months. my block list was like 5 people until last sept.
Here are some text based communities that came to mind:
Thnx
I don't wave to strangers. We only do a head nod around here. (Nods head).

Ha
Itβs so bad that I (normally a lurker) am motivated enough to get out of my cave and post.
Yeah, I consider that a good thing! And fact is, even some of the smaller communities I post to, like !gothindustrial@lemmy.world , !sumo@lemmy.world , and !vampires@lemmy.zip end up having a core of like 3-4 contributors plus various other occasional posters. It's nice having people to talk to without having a flood of people you don't recognize.
It's normal because so many people are confused about it and how to use Fediverse services, particularly with all the options available. Like with Reddit you just go to reddit.com and you're there. Even people who are on Mastodon (probably the most popular Fediverse app) might not know how to use Lemmy. It's gonna take time for it to grow to Reddit levels. Meantime, best thing to do is advertise Fediverse accounts; share @FediTips@social.growyourown.services which has good guides on how to use the Fediverse (including Lemmy), share Lemmy posts on other media where possible, and maybe add some of your favorite communities on your Mastodon or other account profiles.
I agree, but you do the right thing and act at least and that inspires me who also is a lurker!
Lurkers of the world unite!
We are now united, so what now?Β
Jokes aside, do you know any nice areas to hang? ( I just found Dull men's club, lots of interactions)
Sorry I just woke up.
Idk. I guess there's !matrix_friends@lemmy.ml, !makenewfriendshere@lemmy.world, and !friendship@lemmy.ml but like I said they're pretty dead :/
For now casual conversation, just post, and Dull men's club are the best options. But they're not really for chatting, but posting. I doubt they'd ban you for soliciting PMs but maybe.
No worries, life comes in between!
I recently found my country community and had good ecperience there!Β
But so far it feels like people are really nice here on Lemmy!
Alone in our own homes, as Guad intended.
They would probably still use only major communities and topics
True but the minor ones would have enough activity to feel alive. Even with a small percentage, if the overall number is big that may be enough.
I donβt feel very lonely. But I donβt spend as much time as I did on Reddit. Weekends and after work a bit feel enough. I would doomscrolling Reddit constantly.
Hey, I am friend
Hi friend
So what's been going on with you?
Me, I visited family got infected with something. So far so mild though. Tonsil pain and that's it.
I am okay, I also had a mild cold recently, must be something going around.
I'm currently trying to figure out the best way to fit a giant copy of the painting Lament for Icarus in my house, and listening to Olivia Dean. I also just finished playing a story video games called Dispatch recently, you heard of it?
Fitting a room for a lament for what now in your house? That's a unique problem to have lol. Although I guess I can relate a little cause my parents were lowkey hoarders and every now and then we'd play furniture Tetris
Actually yeah I did hear about it. A friend was playing it and I also watched a review. It's the one with the superheroes right?
I don't play many story-based games. I'm like John Carmack who apparently said "Story in a game is like story in a porn movie: It's expected to be there, but it's not important.β. But that's just me heheh
It's a cool painting that I am a very big fan of, because in also a big fan of greek mythology
That's the one! I found it very fun and interesting myself. I love an engaging story with some life affirming morals.
What kind of games do you like to play?
What I like the most: single player 2d games with unique combat gameplay and an exploration, action rpg focus, and secret content.
But really tbh I play mostly the same old games I played as a kid. It's like my comfort zone is fossilized lol. Lots of stuff on gba, ds, psx emulators because back then my computer was a potato. Occasionally some 3d games.
- Megaman battle network
- Metroid fusion
- Castlevania symphony of the night
- Legend of Zelda minish cap
- Final fantasy tactics
- Phoenix Wright series
- Megaman x8
- GTA SA
- Skyrim
- Batman Arkham asylum
- Street Fighter 6
- Hollow knight & silksong
I don't play C&C generals zero hour but I watch the competitive scene.
Btw: if you like greek mythology have you played Hades?
You absolutely must be a big Zelda fan then, no? I love that series. My next game will be Twilight Princess I think. I have the master sword as well! Just need to hang it up somewhere.
Ever heard of RetroArch? Kind of a 1 stop shop for all emulation, other than the newer gens unfortunately
I also love Silksong, haven't brought myself to finish it yet though. I've played Hades 1, not 2 yet though. It's on my very long list, along with Witcher 3, Control, Batman series, various Zelda games. One day I might even finish them π
You absolutely must be a big Zelda fan then, no?
Actually I only played minish cap fully. I tried link to the past on GBA emulator and a link between worlds on 3ds emulator but found both had some quality of life problems. I also tried ocarina of time on n64 emulator but I didn't like it that much. Heresy I know :P. But that was a long time ago and I only played a little. Maybe I didn't give it a fair shot. I never played any other zelda, mostly because I like 2d zeldas and the new ones are harder to emulate without problems. Had this weird bug with a link between worlds where link would go to the right. It's like stick drift on keyboard somehow.
I should definitely play breath of the wild someday because my brother says it's amazing. He played it on emulator too, managed to get it running. But first I gotta play ocarina. He also played Hades and told me to play that. I don't like roguelikes though so I'm hesitant.
Man my list of "should play" is endless lol. Like I said, fossilized comfort zone. There's probably so many things you'd be like "Wait you've NEVER played x?" It's even worse for movies or shows. I'm that guy who never watched anything.
No I never heard of RetroArch. I get my roms from shady sites so good to know.
Hey what else do you like to do in your free time :D?
It might be worth trying the HD remaster of OOT with a 3DS emulator? It takes some button mapping but I got a pretty smooth setup to switch between the 2 screens on Retroarch. ALTTP is absolutely legendary though, would recommend trying that again, if you prefer 2d games
Here's my source for ROMs: https://r-roms.github.io/
Some other stuff I like to do are: archery, kayaking, hiking, and I also like to try my hand at baking sometimes too
That's a great idea. Thanks for the links.
I've always wanted to do archery. I think one time when I was a kid in school they let us shoot at a festival. That was fun. Otherwise you're clearly way more extroverted.
Ok I'm running outta topics so here's a random question: what's the most obscure animal you know living or extinct?
Me I would say Hallucigenia. The extinct spiky stick most closely related to velvet worms. Apparently there was a scientific debate over which side is the face and which is the butt lol
Sometimes I walk to the fridge at 2am, and realize that I only have cheese.
And thats how I eat a brick of cheese at 2am!
What type of cheese?
I only eat Feta cheese. But even there there's a lot of variety. Cheese just might be the most diverse food under a single name ever (not counting things like "sandwich"). It's like dog breeds.
Hey! Whoa! I might be from Ohio, but I DON'T eat dogs! (or cats)
THEY'RE EATING THE DOGS
God what a clown world lol.
Anyways why is your username that?
