I am in awe of the quality and also deeply disturbed by it.

It's giving off some Thanos vibes, just needs to be purple and have a nutsack chin to seal the deal.

Its a technique I call "the great filter"

Nixon only got laid after a date set him straight about Herodotus and his invention of 'narrative history.'

Nixon had plenty of wins and took L that would have made society better. His influence to open china, the establishment of OSHA, and the desire to implement universal healthcare.

I think it's important to differentiate between what Nixon did and the spirit of the time. Many of Nixon's reforms, while positive, were done in the interest of staving off more radical reforms by the Democratic Party, many of which had become extremely popular over the past decade.

My how the Overton Window has shifted eh?

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 22 points 2 months ago (1 children)

tbf, the period of popularity of these issues was pretty brief. Proposals which were passed by Nixon ~1970 would have been unthinkable ~1950.

... but yeah, we've also lost a lot of fucking ground.

Yeah, wild to see even in my lifetime how much things have shifted.

I've moved to a much further left country (Denmark) and hearing and seeing how it's slowly moving to the right as well is fascinating. It's of course a much smaller world than it used to be but it's wild how unified all of that effort it

Yep. I don't think anyone will say "Nixon was perfect!"; it's more that he is a nuanced and complicated figure that has some good amongst all the evil.

EDIT : It's easy to just look at watergate and the list of enemies, the rage and swearing and backstabbing, low charisma and say "Nixon bad". Some of the things that drove him are from his upbringing, things that were unfortunate, some based on genuine desire to be moral and do the right thing, some as a twisted form of self preservation. Do I like him? No. Do I think he's a good person? No.

I just want people to know about the depth of character he has and not just dismiss him as a cartoonish two faced villain.

Although I mock him and do the Billy West impression of him. Arooooo.

I wish we had politicians who weren't cartoonishly evil and aware of it. Like, Nixon was not a good person, but at least his scandal was something he resigned over... You know?

I don't think anything could make DJT resign. He's too much of a man-baby to allow it without a full blown tantrum and insurrection calling, probably.

Thing is, El Taco is the result of a 50 year campaign to ensure that Watergate can never happen again. Which would not have even been an issue if Tricky Dick hadn't become President by deliberately pandering to all the neo-Confederates who were butthurt that LBJ dared acknowledge that black people were actually human beings. So, y'know, he can still fuck right off.

[–] TheOakTree@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 months ago

Oh, absolutely. I'd happily piss on his grave. Even then, he was a shithead who, at least, had to pretend to be decent. We don't even have that anymore.

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 2 points 2 months ago

Honestly his foul mouth is one of his humanizing features to me.

[–] AceFuzzLord@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 months ago

A win so rare that if it was a steak, it'd be mooing.

[–] Zozano@aussie.zone 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Rare? Not really.

Have you even thanked Nixon for NixOS?
