Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

So let me get this straight, the bill acknowledges climate change is bad, GHG emissions cause climate change, but then targets everything but the root cause of the problem? Really amazing work they're doing out there in Arizona.

it took a while until people agreed the earth is not flat. different century, different level of media influence. but just saying.

[–] 20cello@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Wow,that's remarkably stupid

[–] hector@lemmy.today 1 points 1 month ago

Outlawing geo engineering is not stupid. Castigating doing so is because they did not pick a fight with oil they would lose badly 10x over is stupid.

I'm telling you guys, Republicans are aliens from another world that prefer a warmer Earth.

Exactly, it's always projection

You say that yet you are here mocking one of the only good things they have done because it was presented to you in a way that oh they didn't pick a fight with oil companies to do something they have no power to do. Is this argument you guys are castigating them for here?

Paying billionaires' companies to spray aerosols to block the sun while continuing business as usual is an arrogant hubristic folly. The unintended consequences of which we cannot know.

These states are admittedly worried about chemtrails first, idk about that but geo engineering is very real.

I don't disagree with you, but it also seems absurd to prevent deployment of mitigation strategies while simultaniously ingoring, maybe even encouraging, CO2 emissions. Hence my joke that they're aliens.

How does that even work? The only way I know to change the weather is with the Clear Skies shout — in Skyrim (a video game).

People have been experimenting with cloud seeding for decades, but more likely this is another BS bill targeting contrails to feed the paranoid agenda.

guts of a century really, since the 40s (I just read this on wikipedia right now)

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago

In GTA III, you could type in "I LOVE SCOTLAND" to change the weather to pouring rain

The spell Weather Control in D&D worked in 3.0/3.5

(Also a game)

Pump sulfur dioxide, aerosols, into the upper atmosphere.

What about planting trees to offset carbon? When does an artificial forest start to count as Geo engineering?

What about Jewish space lasers? All of their representatives are in Israel’s pocket so I’m sure they’ll be exempt

Soooo....

We're letting K-jizz tell us what's going on?

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Its a local NPR station that airs jazz and some news https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KJZZ_(FM)

[–] BierSoggyBeard@feddit.online 1 points 1 month ago

I actually knew that, I was just going for the cheap joke. Low hanging fruit, and all that.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 1 points 1 month ago

Geoengineering should be outlawed, and just because it is presented to you in a way that they also didn't pick a fight with oil companies that they would not win and can't do it is stupid, really shows a person's own lack of intelligence if they reject this because of that. No fucking Wonder we are in this place as a country. Jesus fucking Christ.

Cannot change it at all? To improve it or make it worse?
