it really was like that.

I remember one time I got spooked that I was about to be raided and took all my backups (on DVDs) to a friends house after a loooong and winding path to their house to ensure I wasn't followed.

when I dropped it off all he asked was, "can I copy what you have?"

told him he could copy whatever he wanted if he had the drive space. it was a full binder of 100 data DVDs.

was never raided but I was looking over my shoulder for weeks after that.

What gave you the feeling you were about to be raided? Did you receive threats? Was law enforcement stalking you?

I worked at an electronics store at the time and a cop came in asking me some very specific questions about pirating. like a dumbass, I shared my knowledge. Though at the time I didn't know he was LE.

one of my coworkers called me and told me a cop was around asking for me at work on my day off. soon after that my internet connection died.

I got spooked and dbanned my drives while I took my backups to another friends house.

the guy was probably just trying to learn about piracy tbh. never saw him again after that.

Growing up for the final 6 months of the 90s, you mean? Napster launched June 1, 1999...

Thank you for bringing logic here. I remember Napster and Kazaa and LimeWire being a problem in the early 2000s.

Once in a while maybe you will feel the urge
To break international copyright law
By downloading MP3's from file sharing sites
Like Morpheus or Grokster or LimeWire or KaZaA

Yes I nearly got stung once circa 2002, I downloaded some pirated movie off of one of those platforms and shortly after received something in the mail specifically telling me what I downloaded and that I was required to respond to them and they were going to litigate. I did not respond. And the problem seemed to disappear. Thankfully I did not end up being one of those people in the news who was taken to court for millions of dollars.

Ah, now they bust down your door in full paramilitary tactical gear after rolling up in an MRAP and APC, then just shoot you for “resisting.”

90’s were the good old days.

Remember the ‘80s, where a lot of the action films were heroes wiping out boardrooms full of evil dystopian executives…? Yeah. Funny we don’t see much of that anymore.

And then it turns out they weren't even supposed to be at your house, they were targeting your neighbor

Unrealistic no grenades and they didn't enter shooting.

[–] RedWheelbarrow@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah.... Good old days!
