Kate Mulgrew is a Star Trek legend; in fact, her Captain Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager featured prominently in the latest trailer for Starfleet Academy, which incorporated famous moments from Trek history to connect the new show to what’s come before. Her last appearance in the franchise was as the star of the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy, which wrapped up last year on Netflix. There has been some talk in recent years of her returning to the role of Janeway one more time in live-action as well, so when we saw Mulgrew at the Starfleet Academy world premiere event in New York on Tuesday, we asked her about it.

They’re “still talking” about Janeway show

Way back at the end of 2024, Kate Mulgrew made some news at a convention when she revealed that Alex Kurtzman, the man running all of Star Trek TV for Paramount since 2017, had approached her about a return in live-action as Janeway. She said it didn’t feel right to her at the time and told the convention crowd: “I’m not sure it has all of the elements that I would need to have.”

I’d be interested in a live action Janeway show, but it would probably end up like Picard season 2, or set in the 32nd century like Discovery and Academy. That would pretty much ruin the idea for me.

I like her view of the character and deep understanding of what makes Star Trek great, and a great moral educator. I don't usually look into the actors all that much and had no idea she was so on the ball with that stuff.

Wonderful to see :-)
