First off: Holy shit, it's dollar-store Joel McHale.

Secondly: Cops are not here, and never have been here, to prevent crime. The LAW is not about preventing crime. Crime will crime no matter what.

The cops are there to make sure that the uglier parts of society; the homelessness, the addiction, the violence, the desperation, is kept out of sight from the feckless tax-payers who would rather live in a dream world than face reality.

They spend more time clearing out protests (legal) and homeless encampments (legal) than they ever spend preventing your apartment from being broken into. Sure, they'll show up in the aftermath to mitigate the possibility of you getting justice on your own. But they won't actually do anything beyond the performative.

I don't think most of the violence is what the laws require. I think thats just a fun little cop bonus that they get to use violence when they choose when and with whom to uphold the law.
